The new Folkfest is hundreds of hours of faith, and hard work The Springville World Folkfest Folk-fest as it exists today is the product prod-uct of faith, foresight and hard work on the part of people (mostly (most-ly volunteers) who had a great vision of an annual, worldwide cultural exchange based on folk arts in Springville. Faith in the project drew the financial support of the Spring-. Spring-. ville City Council at a time when few city leaders would have seen beyond fiscal concerns. Hundreds of citizens in Utah provide food, transportation and beds for visiting visit-ing performers every year. Thousands Thou-sands of hours are given by volunteers who can see all the benefits of this wonderful event. Founded in 1985 with its first performances in August of 1996, the first Springville World Folkfest Folk-fest delivered 12 performances and four folk parades with 460 dancers from 13 countries. The festival is now in its thirteenth year and is the largest international interna-tional folk dance festival in the United States. With continual improvements in overall management, manage-ment, stage facilities, lighting, sound and other aspects, the festival is now better than ever. From the first experience of becoming part of an American family in Springville Spring-ville to saying good bye to a dear friend made during nine or 10 days of festival exchanges and performances, the World Folkfest offers a true opportunity for participants and patrons to come to know, understand and even love one another. The Folkfest is probably best epitomized by an international dance called the "Farandahl," which is traditionally danced on the last night of the festival. Participants and patrons of all nations join hands in a giant, surging chain. They move in and out with simple steps to lively music and form one laughing, happy tapestry of mankind. This year's Folkfest will 1 feature six regular performances, a free street dance, parade and free dance workshops. One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. "Wizard of iz" is qualify production by Fred Heath Springville's Villa Playhouse Theatre is now home to L. On the whole, the performance is energetic and certainly provides a night's worth of quality entertainment that stresses the important values in life which have made this story so timeless. The play follows the main script closely, with a few variations varia-tions that are obvious, but do bring a lighter and more humorous humor-ous side to the story. I particularly enjoyed the performance of ZekeCowardly Lion, played by both Larry McLay and Don Green, (the night I attended it was McLay). He truly enlightens the audience with his portrayal as one who is afraid of pretty much everything, but accomplishes the task in a way that endures the audience to his character, much the same way as in the famous movie. Some of the scenes where I felt that McLay shined was in Act 1 Scene 13, where the Cowardly Cow-ardly Lion and Dorothy fall asleep in the poppies that are part of a spell the Wicked Witch of the West casts. It is a small line, but he captures the essence of his character as one who is willing to give in when adversity appears. Another scene is in Act 2 Scene 6, in the haunted forest where his cowardice is prevalent again. Another character that I feel did an excellent job was the Good Witch of the North, played my Miriam Stay on the night I attended. I did enjoy the main roles of Dorothy Gale, played by Julie Jensen (on the night I attended the play) and the Wicked Witch of the West (Anne Jackson). However, I did think there were some things lacking in each of their performances. For instance, I thought Jensen was a little bit timid in her dancing moves and singing, but to her credit, I'm sure it is hard to dance as well as she may like to with a real dog on stage. I felt that she lacked genuine emotion. In summary, "The Wizard Wiz-ard of Oz" is a quality production and the energy invoked by much of the cast is enough to recommend recom-mend attendance of this production produc-tion as a good night's worth of entertainment.
