Mayor's Message by Mayor Hal Wing My Fellow Citizens: I had the privilege of attending the play, "The Wizard of Oz," at the Villa Theatre last night. What a performance! perfor-mance! I must confess that I was taken there against my will to see my two grandchildren, Amanda and Hannah Hutchings, perform as munchkins. Once I had my popcorn and drink and started to pay attention, I became mesmerized mesmer-ized with the quality of the actors and actresses, the settings, the muysic and the directing, Folks, this in one very fine production. It will make you laugh and cry, even though anyone any-one that has not been on a different differ-ent planet for the past forty years knows how the story ends. These people just flat out put on a sterling, sparkling performance. Get your tickets before they are sold out! In this article I would like to use some space to recognize one of our choice citizens. This person per-son is very quiet and unpretentious. unpreten-tious. I know that mention of him in this week's mayor's message will cause him a little embarrassment. embarrass-ment. In spite of that, I feel this is long overdue. , . Even though he was born and raised in Delta, Utah, Fenton Billings is truly one of Springville' Spring-ville' s favorite sons. He was born March 22, 1937, the tenth child of Gerald and Anna Billings. He has a younger brother, four older brothers and four living sisters. Fenton and his brothers worked hard on the family farm. When he was a junior in high school, he went to work after school for a local parts and hardware hard-ware store. His employer was very exacting and demanding. Because of this, Fenton learned to identify the screws by threads and size and put them in the proper bins without mixing them up. Fenton learned how to repair bikes quickly and accurately. His desire and talent to work with his hands led him to enroll in "shop," as it was called then. Fenton' s shop instuctor, although very positive, was also a very strict person demanding a good work ethic and quality from his students. He wanted his students to do their very best and not only complete the projects they started, start-ed, but to finish them in a manner man-ner they would be proud of. Fenton' s craftsmanship was very good and won the approval of his instructor. In 1955, Fenton attended Utah State University and graduated in 1960 with a degree in engineering engineer-ing and a teaching certificate. The rest is the best. Fenton started start-ed in 1960 to teach industrial arts. Over a span of 38 years, this humble and talented man has influenced, for the good, many thousands of our youth. Fenton's dedication to craftsmanship and quality, and his desire to see these young men and women do their absolute best, is second only to his love and concern that they become upstanding morally strong, emotionslly stable members mem-bers of society. Students in Fenton's classroom class-room will find all of the ingredients ingredi-ents to excel. All they have to do 1998 marks the 54th year of business for Allen's Super Save Markets. The company started in 1944 by Orlando "Olie" Allen, in Provo, now has three retail food and drug stores operating in Utah County. The family tradition continues with Steve Allen now president of the company. is add attendance and effort. These future leaders of our city, state and country will graduate from his classes with a lot more than the beautiful self-made master pieces that are born of their labor. They will graduate better prepared to meet the challenges chal-lenges of life. Even though Fenton Fen-ton demands effort, craftsmanship and excellence, the item being made means very little to him. The student, the young men and women on the other hand are precious in his eyes. Fenton has concentrated on industrial arts although he also taught electronics, driver's educa-. tion and math. Most of all, whatever what-ever else he has done, he has taught our youth-yours and mine and the youth of many before us--about life. For those 38 years of selfless service I say, "Thank you Fenton for strengthening our youth and thereby making Springville Spr-ingville a better place to live." Finally, about the art, class? Let's all get a life! There was and is only one question. It was put to me as mayor and I asked your opinion. It really is quite simple to resolve: yes, it stays, or no, it goes. Can it really be that controversial? contro-versial? Honestly folks, the sky is NOT falling! "We are proud to have served this area for the past 54 years, and strive to bring Utah County the best quality and variety in food and drug merchandise at a fair price," said Allen. "The food industry has been in constant change and competition competi-tion is coming in many forms. We feel we are taking steps that will allow us to continue to serve our customers into the next century. cen-tury.
