Show Page Eight - The Springville Herald Ryan B. Richards, son of David and Stephanie Richards of Springville, has completed his LDS mission in Montreal, Canada. He will speak in church on Sunday, December 14. 1997 at 1 p.m. in the Hobble Hob-ble Creek Second Ward, 555 S. 600 East, Springville. His grandparents are Warren R. and Merle Richards of Weslaco, Texas and Glen and June Royle of River Heights, Utah. Christmas tradition "Ceremony of carols" The annual Christmas Chorus production of Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" will be presented 7:30 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. December 13-14, at the Utah State Hospital Chapel. This 1 8-year tradition has become as much a part of Christmas for many Utahns as die more well known "Handel's Messiah." The women's chorus, with solo harp of Britten's arrangement, arrange-ment, evokes the medieval history histo-ry of the carols sung by boys' choirs. Britten gives the old music a modern twist with his use of complex rhythms and close harmonies. The Christmas Chorus presentation presen-tation of Britten is a tradition for chorus members as well as many of the audience. Conductor Martha Mar-tha C. Sargent of Springville and many of the forty-member choir have performed since the chorus began. Harpists Talia Anderson and Jenet Jacob will accompany the chorus. Chorus members sing and also preform on the instruments instru-ments from flute and bassoon to a bell choir. The State Hospital Chapel setting is also part of the tradition. Church donates The Travelers Aid Society received a check for $225,000 from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for use in providing adequate services for the increased number of homeless people in Salt Lake City during the winter months. Travelers Aid operated the Salt Lake Community Communi-ty Shelter and other services for ' individuals and families who are ' homeless. Caring for the poor and needy - is a scriptural injunction and the church adheres to that injunction through its welfare services system sys-tem for members and its humani- tarian aid program for those of pother persuasions throughout the world. The church's humanitarian assistance has been in the form of cash, food, clothing, medical supplies and educational materials, materi-als, which in recent years have reached the needy in 137 countries. coun-tries.
