Show Young artists honored at museum qut g,pringttUe $eralb 'An awards program was "held Sunday. December 7. at the Springville Museum of Art to announce the Winners of the 12th annual "Christmas lamb" exhibit. Sponsored by David and Ingrid Nemelka pf Mapleton. this holiday holi-day art show has become a festive fes-tive tradition at the museum. Allyson Nemelka took pan in the program this year by reading the "Christmas Lamb" story from which the exhibit's theme is taken. The story tells of a change that occurs in a young boy's life after he visits an art museum and views a particular Christmas painting. This tale illustrates the true meaning of Christmas, where lasting joy ts found only in unselfish giving. Following the story. Dr. Sharon Gray announced the winners. Allyson Nemelka con gratulated the young artists as well and handed each of them a certificate and $10 cash prize. The talented award winners are Nichole Appel, Shannon Babb. Mapleton residents Tom Augustus Au-gustus and Brent Tew. backyard neighbors and Provo City firemen, fire-men, will load up their families and a couple of trailers just before be-fore Christmas to travel to Mexico, Mexi-co, where they will play Santa Claus for coastal villagers on the Sea of Cortez. "It .staned with a television ad." Augustus confessed this week. "There's one that says, why give your kids something they won't remember? It got me thinking, and this just developed from that. " What developed was an idea to collect toys, clothing and other donations, then haul them to Mexico lor distribution to orphanages, or-phanages, schools and even "people by the side of the road." The two families were already planning a Christmas trip to Mexico, to revisit an area they'd toured before, camping on the beach, diving and exploring. But coupled with the idea of giving, planning forjhe trip took on new significance? "We presented the idea to the kids, and as they came to understand a little more about what was going to happen, they got even more excited. Even my little six-year-old is saying she wants to give up her presents to help others." It seems everyone who hears about the project wants to get involved "It started off as just the two families, but has spun off of thai. Everyone has come out of the woodwork wanting to be ; part of it. Everyone wants to give at this time of year." Another neighbor. 16-year-old Andrew Roylance, got interested in the project. He volunteered to help with collecting and sorting donations as part of a Eagle project. He set to work, organiz-. ing the ward youth to make and pass out livers, a task accomplished accom-plished in conjunction with a previously planned food drive. Then he and he parents drove around collecting donations. ''We got mostly clothing and toys, some really nice toys in. fact." Roylance said. "A lot of them are brand new, still in their packages. The kids are going to love them." Augustus said the target area is about a third of the way south on the mainland side of the Gulf of California. He said the group has only a general plan for distributing dis-tributing the goods. "We're just going to play it by ear, sort of follow the Christmas spirit looking look-ing for people who will benefit from and appreciate the gifts." They expect to give most to a local orphanage he knows about and possibly some churches or schools. He noted some women and girls are so poor in that area they don't attend church because they to not have a dress. Because of the overwhelming response. Augustus isn't sure there will be room to take everything every-thing south. But he promised any donations that cannot be taken on the trip will be distributed to the needy locally. "This has really been fun." he concluded. Mi h? mr?
