Alw J Jig The Hobble Creek Men's Club Championship is being played over 36 holes, and the first 18 holes are complete. Shad Thomas, Thom-as, playing flawless golf, carded a record-tying eight under par 63 to take the lead by seven shots. Shad's card had nine, threes and nine fours which included birdies on 1 and If 2, eagle on 3, birdie on 9, birdies on 11, 13 and 18 with rounds of 31 on the front nine and 32 on the back. Other golfers scores included Rick Johnson, 70; Todd Hutch-ings, Hutch-ings, 71; Robert Shunn, 72; and Jay Lamb, 72. Division II leaders are Dale Coats, 79; Bob Sayer, 82; and Aaron Smith, 82. Senior Division leaders are: Ron Beckstrom, 79; Ted Bills, 80; and Clark Whitlock, 80. Play will conclude this Saturday Satur-day with 18 more holes. Men's Night, August 8, Stable-ford Stable-ford with Gross Bull: Steven Fuhr, Len Pugh, Jim Rayburn and Tom Ferguson, Alan Reed, Kerry Jones and Trent Ith, Blaine Dalton. Former resident in Seals compete at state meet Calif, senior games Ray Beardall, former Springville Spring-ville resident, took home a silver medal in the 80-84 age group, singles horseshoe tournament at the California Senior Games held at Sacramento State University. He also won a gold medal in doubles horseshoes with his son, Darryl Beardall, who also got a gold in the 55-59 singles. Ray was a professional world championship horseshoe thrower in 1988 and retired to senior games in 1992. He was blinded by a stroke in 1994 and now throws with the guidance of his daughter, Sharon Daniels, and of his son. They show him where the foul line is and indicate the direction to throw and how to correct from his previous shot. Beardall, a lifelong athlete, started boxing at age eight. He was a runner for years, and at age 70, ran a 70-second quarter-mile. quarter-mile. In 1983, a bout with pancreatic pan-creatic cancer ended his running career free of cancer in 1987, he took up horseshoes professionally and was a world champion the next year. His brother, Scott Beardall, and sisters, Leota Cox, Leola Hamon and Ida Hardy, live in Springville. SHS volleyball team Any 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade girls interested in playing on the JV or Varsity Volleyball Team, try-outs will begin August 19 and go until August 23. Tryouts Try-outs will be from 3 to 6:30 p.m. daily. Girls interested should meet in the main guy at Springville High School on August 19 at 3 p.m. Each girl will need to bring knee pads and must have had a physical. physi-cal. Athletes can get physical forms from the front office at Springville High School. My 9th or 10th grade girl interested in playing on the Soph omore Volleyball Team, try-outs will begin on August 27 at 3 p.m. in the main gym at Springville Spring-ville High School. Try-outs will run from 3 to 6 p.m. each day. Athletes should bring knee pads and must turn in a physical form stating that they have had a phys-.: ical and are in condition to try-, out for this sport. The Springville Seals Aquatic Team-United States Swimming-competed Swimming-competed at the 1996 Utah Long Course Junior Olympics and Senior State Championship Swim Meet at Alta Recreation Center on July 24-27. Twenty-seven teams were represented from various cities and swim clubs around the state as well as a team from Japan. Following four days of competition competi-tion including preliminary and final swimming events, Springville' Spring-ville' s swim team took 4th place overall. In individual events placing in the top eight swimmers overall in their age groups were: Tanner Folster, 1st, high point (1112 boys); Kenneth Clark, 3rd, (1112 boys); Kenneth Clark, 3rd, (1112 boys); Analyn Skabelund, 7th, (1314 girls). Tanner Folster also won Overall Over-all High Point out of all the boys' age divisions in the state with an accumulation of 177 points. The swim team competed in 12 relays during the four-day meet.
