Associated Utah Artists exhibit One of Utah's oldest professional profes-sional art associations is the Associated Utah Artists. Founded in February of 1940 by Florence Ware, it counted among its charter char-ter members Ted Wassmer, Mary C. Kimball Johnson, LeConte Stewart, George Dunphy, Jack Vigos, Ken Davidson and Verla L. Birrell. James T. Harwood too was a charter member but died before their first show. Other important members through the years included: Gordon Cope, B.F. Larsen, Cornelius Salisbury, Paul Salisbury and Alvin Gittens. The association was founded with the idea of "painting sanely" in opposition to the hated abstrac- v tions of George Dibble and others. oth-ers. Florence Ware disliked the direction art was taking and vainly attempted to curb modernism's modern-ism's march to dominance. She believed, and rightly so, that eventually most of the official institutions of Utah would favor art of modernist tendencies. Today's Associated Utah Artists are considered quite conservative, con-servative, although artists like Stan Elmer, Jossy Lowness, Jan Slusser, Val Moffett and Steve Sheffield have made modernist incursions. In some ways the "look and feel" of the AUA has not changed much in the past 56 years. Artist's like Leona Ferro has been exhibiting her landscapes land-scapes with the AUA for 45 years. There are a number of outstanding out-standing landscapes by Mary Lou Romney, Sharon Jewkes, Paul Lyon and Theresa Hanel. Water-colors Water-colors by Lucile Cannon and Carole H. Evans depict rustic buildings in a painterly manner. Florals of the first order can be seen in Barton North's poppies, Linda Nelson's hollyhocks and Janet Collins' garden scene. Figurative work by Margaret Heywood and Kimball Slusser are of special note. The most interesting work in the exhibition is a painted-sculpture or a sculpted-painting by Raymond Edvalson of a three-dimensional three-dimensional ' landscape. A Florence Flor-ence Ware-esqiie still-life ' : 1 by Marjorie Paxman and recent bronze casts and marbles of older work by Alice Morrey Bailey are highlights of the exhibition. The exhibition continues until September 1. The museum is closed on Mondays and is open between 10-5 Tues.-Sat., Wed. until 9 p.m. and Sunday 3-6 p.m. There may be said to be two classes of people in the world: those who constantly divide the people of the world into two classes, and those who do not. -Robert Benchley Clarity is the supreme politeness polite-ness of him who wields a pen. -Jean Henri Fabre b wmmm wmmm i j fegy were under I y i the tmpression ; i 2& m mm wri y-b i jrzmm COUPON sl00 OFF Ticket Price Expires August 19th 0ttf Call for Reservations Funny Family Portrait ... 489-3088 a Laugh a Mtnute!
