It's birthday party time ' at our house again. My husband and 1 are like people who buy puppies and kittens when it comes to traditions. tradi-tions. We forget that they grow up and get old. I know people who seem to think before they commit themselves to years of idiocy, but we're not among them. We get these great ideas and then, after it's all over, we remember remem-ber that to a kid, any great (read "fun," "expensive") idea instantly becomes a tradition. That's why you don't ever say we "traditionally" clean the whole house Saturday or we "traditionally" clear the table after dinner. You say, we "traditionally" go to Lagoon at the end of the summer or, as in our house, we "traditionally" have a huge birthday party for the kid who's lucky day it is. This is not because we want to clear out the neighborhood of $2 presents. It's because I have this horrible fear that some mythical little kid is going to be scarred forever by not getting to come to our house on such and -such a day and get a cheap party favor and a stomach ache. This sad-eyed waif stares pitifully at me in my imagination imagina-tion while I buy bags of jelly beans and plastic diamond rings. With tears filling those limpid little star-flecked pools, he says to me, "What difference dif-ference docs it make if you have 1 5 kids or 25 kids? The whole day is going to be a wreck anyway." So, I end up inviting every living being that might by anywhere near our house from 1 to 2:30 on, the afternoon of the great event. I do, however, come right to my senses after that, for I know well the great secret of beloved children's party hostesses hos-tesses down through the ages. The secret is, Mind Your Own Business and Let Them Have a Good time. Not everyone knows this secret though. Published in the Springville Herald April 18 & 25 ami May 2.' She spends it on her kid's birthday parties. At least that's what it looks like to me after reading her book, "The Penny Whistle Party Par-ty Planner." She runs a toy store in New York and this woman does not take cheaply the idea of entertaining kids. I personally think playing Red Rover, Red Rover is about as elaborate as must situations call for. A bean bag throw is exotic at our house. But, Ms. Brokaw suggests that you start planning about six weeks ahead of time. Six weeks! For some families in this valley, there's not six weeks between birthdays! All year long! To be honest, there are some great ideas in this book for fun things. It's just written in such an unrealistic, New Yorkish kind of way that you know you're talking vastly different life styles. For example, for one first birthday party, the parents had T-shirts made for the occasion with "Baby Luke's Birthday Tour" written on the front, and invited 40 of their friends and 1 1 babies to the big party at their home. They went from Buffalo, New York, to New York City and then to San Francisco for the other grandparents. grand-parents. The parents said "We will show him the pictures." Well, I hope so. They described the event as "a reaffirmation of his birth, a day we treasure." Anybody Any-body who describes a birthday party for a kid who's not even "there," so to speak, as a reaffirmation re-affirmation of birth, lives in another time warp than me. Anyway, at our house, my kids and 25 of their closest friends and siblings played Red Rover (even though my son had a broken arm and only watched), hit him over the head 25 times with their different dif-ferent presents as they opened them, decorated cupcakes, screamed and yelled a lot, and went home. Sure, 1 feel badly about not having slmeone from the zoo come and show them cobras like they do at the Brokaws' or having everyone come in costume, cos-tume, or going on a pretend trip to England. But mainly, I'm just glad it's over. INESCALANTE-Cafefor sale, good business, excellent ex-cellent location, fully equipped, $75,000. Dawn Realty, 1-8264262. A25 ASEMBLY!
