His responsibilities include a full acre of flower and shrub beds, 250 trees and seven acres of lush lawn. Scott joined Valtek in 1979 as the company's horticulturist and now supervises the appearance of both Valtek-Springville's Valtek-Springville's plant and the grounds. He is or has been associated with the Springville Shade Tree Commission, American Horticultural Hor-ticultural Society, Audubon Society, Springville Beautifica-tion Beautifica-tion Committee, and the Springville Parks and Recreation Recrea-tion Board. He also served as an officer of the Utah Shade Tree Association. A barber by trade, Reed Averett has always had a great love for arborculture. After retiring from his profession in 1972, he joined Springville City as superintendent of the Springville Parks Department, where he was responsible for all parks, cemeteries and public pub-lic buildings. It was during his tenure that he pushed ahead an aggressive program to plant trees throughout the city parks and streets. When he retired as park superintendent in 1985, he was responsible for the planting of 1,012 trees in Springville. As a member of the Springville Spring-ville Shade Tree Commission, he and members of that group worked to get Springville named a "Tree City USA" in 1979. The city has continued to receive that honor every year since because of the efforts of that commission. The Aztecs of Mexico celebrated New Year's on February 2nd. Students at the Sage Creek Elementary School have found out as they have interacted with Joe Pitti, a professional mime, who is doing a residency residen-cy at the school as part of the Utah Arts Council "Artist in Residency" grant. Joe will spend the next two weeks working in the classroom teaching young 'mimers' the techniques and fun of this performing per-forming art. In addition, a "Target Group" of students, selected by Joe, will receive special tutelage and will prepare a mime show to present to the entire studentbody on Friday, May 4. Pitti, who hails from New York City, was first invited to Utah to perform mime about eight years ago. "It was the first time I'd been outside of New York," says Joe. "I fell in love with this place, the open spaces, the mountains, the natural beauty." This experience ex-perience led Joe soon after to move to Salt Lake City. Maturation program at Mapleton School The Maturation Program for the fifth grade boys and girls will be held at the Mapleton School on Tuesday, May 1 , at 2 p.m. The program for the girls will be taught by Lori Barber, School Nurse. It will include the video, "Growing Up On Broadway," along with a discussion dis-cussion of the maturation process. The program for the boys will be taught by Mike Murray, Mur-ray, school psychologist. It will include the filmstrip, "Understanding "Unde-rstanding Puberty: Coping With Adolescence," and will also include a discussion of the maturation process as it pertains per-tains to boys. Parents are welcome to come to school on the assigned day to view the program with their child. A parental preview of the program has been held in the past and has had little or no participation. Therefore, if you have concerns about the material being presented, please contact the school nurse at 379-8725. These programs have been approved by the Nebo School District Maturation Committee and by the Nebo School Board. After moving to Salt Lake, Joe was selected to participate with 42 other mimers in a two-week two-week seminar with none other than the master of mime himself, him-self, Marcel Marceau. Joe began his residency in the school Monday with a number called "Bubble Gum," one of the first pieces he ever originated as a mime. Children were delighted with his antics as he went through the illusion of working with the sticky substance. "Growing Up" was equally enjoyable as Joe depicted some moments in a boy's life from toddler to man. A highlight of the act was "Masks." Here, Pitti seemingly took various faces from a shelf and interchanged expressions to the delight of the entire audience. "You make it look so easy," comjnented Jacob Thor-son Thor-son following the show. That is the art of mime according to Joe - to make it look easy. Muscle endurance Muscle endurance doesn't naturally decline until we're in our 70's or 80's, but we do lose muscle strength sooner. Good news: With exercise and training, train-ing, we can slow the decline in our strength and retain good muscle vigor well into our later years. A light workout three times a week with weights will do wonders to maintain your muscle strength.
