Show j 1'age Six - The Springville Herald - April t, 1W1 i I AAnl CCA thfantnr wins at convention On Tuesday, March 31 and Wednesday, April 1, the Springville FFA officers of-ficers for this year and newly elected officers for next year along with the FFA advisors, Robert Brock and Loren Phillips attended the State FFA Convention held in Provo, at the BYU. Members who attended were: Alan Roberts; Sheldon Phillips, Bert McClain, Phil McClain, Lee Hjorth, Brent Miller, Suzan Edenfield, Lynn Walpole, Joe Sparks, Steve Hatfield, Kurt Seamons, Brian Ostler, and Michelle Goodrich, who competed in the State FFA Sweetheart Contest. Awards won by members and by the chapter were: Extemporaneous Speaking: Sheldon Phillips, first place state. Sheldon received $100 and a plaque. He wijl now represent Utah in. the National FFA competition com-petition in Kansas City, Missouri in November. Parlimentary Procedure Pro-cedure Team: third place state : Sheldon Phillips, Alan Roberts, Bert McClain Phil McClain Mc-Clain and Alan Houtz. B.O.A.C. Award Building Our American Communties) gold emblem: em-blem: Only five chapters in the state received this award. The Springville chapter will compete in the National Convention. Five Star Chapter: Only eight chapters received this award. This award is presented to the chapters who make accomplishments ac-complishments in all areas during the school year. Chapter Records: Second place in state. State Farmers: Alan Roberts, Sheldon Phillips, Brent Miller. Proficiency Awards: Calvin Crandall, first place state in crop production. He received $100 and a plaque. American Farmer Degree: Calvin Crandall. This is the highest award a member can receive. He will receive this award at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri in November. Sheldon Phillips: State FFA Vice-President for the year 1981-1982. The local chapter is very proud of Sheldon on this great accomplishment. SHS purchase painting announced Springville High School studentboriy officers and ai l queens pose beside painting pain-ting the school has purchased from the 57th Annual April Salon to be hung in the high school. The painting is entitled "Shadows of Winters Past" by Allen Heinhold. It was presented at the school bv queens Kris Dixon, Patrice Niclson and I'altv Jensen. Sheldon Phillips elected state FFA vice president IBIIIIIIIHIIf"" n'"M"" IJ IV ' Sheldon Phillips was elected vice president of the Utah State Future Farmers of America at the 5:trd annual convention held last week at BYU. He also won numerous awards, as did others in the Springville Spr-ingville High School chapter. Band garage sale set Springville High School Band garage sale will be held Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pioneer Drive-In. Mary and Jeanine Cox have graciously offered their facilities to the group. All residents of Springville are urged to donate items for the sale and also to "attend and spend" in order to raise funds to complete payment on the uniforms for the band and purchase instruments, etc. which are urgently needed. The Kolob 15th ward Young Women will be showing Disney's 101 Dalmations in the Kolob Stake House on Friday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. Come and enjoy the show with us. There is a $1 admission and concessions con-cessions will be sold. Sheldon Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Phillips of Springville, was elected to the office of State FFA Vice-President Vice-President for the Utah Association Future Farmers of America at the 53rd annual convention con-vention held last week at BYU. Sheldon is presently a senior at Springville High School where he is the vice-president of the local chapter of the FFA. While in the FFA he has been very active in the showing of livestock, having exhibited may (50) grand champions on his breed-ding breed-ding and fat hog projects in the past several years. Sheldon has also excelled in the fitting of fat hogs as well as show steers, winning several firsts. Sheldon has also been very active in 4-H for the past ten years. This was highlighted when Sheldon and his two sisters won the State Livestock Judging Contest and attended the National Contest in Denver, Colorado where they took 10th place. Sheldon has also been very active in public speaking. At the chapter contest he won first place in extemporaneous speaking, as well as prepared public speaking. At the region contest he won first place inex-temporaneous inex-temporaneous speaking and second place in prepared public speaking. He was also a member of the first place parlimentary Procedure team at region. At the state ' contest Sheldon placed first in extemporaneous ex-temporaneous speaking and qualified for the National FFA Contest in Kansas City, Missouri in November of 1981. He was also chairman of the third place parliamentary procedure team at State. When Sheldon was in his sophomore year in high school he was high point individual, in the State FFA Livestock Judging, first place team. In 1980 he was a member of the second place FFA Meats Team. In the fall of 1980 he was on the State FFA Land Judging Team which placed second. While in high school he has been a member of the football and basketball teams, lettering four times in varsity sports. Sheldon's older brother Jay was also a State FFA officer serving .as secretary. Jay was later elected to national vice-president vice-president of the Western Region. Sheldon also has three sisters, two have been very active in the FFA. Sheldon's other sister was a varsity cheerleader and is presently a school teacher in Cache Valley. Sheldon has had an opportunity that not many FFA members have, that of having his father as his FFA advisor. ad-visor. Next year Sheldon ' plans to attend Snow College where he will start a pre-food science program. Sheldon will be traveling throughout the state to fulfill his job as state FFA Vice-President. Amy Lynne Sorensen celebrated her first birthday on Sunday, April 5. Her parents are Dean and Joyce Sorensen. Grandparents are Fukan and Dora Sorensen, Springville; and Ferrus and Beth I. arson of Mapleton. Throughout the past month Springville High School studentbody has been raising funds for the purchase of a painting from the 57th Annual April Salon. Save Geneva meet tonight At the request of the Citizen's Coalition to Save Geneva, Mayor Jim Ferguson will meet with the public this week to report on what is being done here and across the nation to strengthen our steel industry and protect our economic interests. The meeting will be held in the Provo City Commission Chambers at the Provo City Center beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9. The Coalition Board extends an open invitation to the general public. Local mayors, city councils, and county commissioners com-missioners are especially invited and encouraged to attend. With the combined funds of $480 the student council, accompanied by Stan Burningham, high school art instructor and Museum of Art Board member, selected five paintings for the student vote. Elections were held Friday, April 10, and the winning painting entitled "Shadows of Winters Past" by Allen Reinhold was presented by Art Ball Queens Kris Dixon, Patrice Nielson and Patty Jensen. The student high school participating in both fundraising and Art Ball attendance has been greater, than any other year since the school moved to its present location.
