Kv Oneita Sums ion More than 2000 men and women received their diplomas from Brigham Young University during commencement exercises exer-cises this Spring. One of them was Barry Clement, a young Springville man, paralyzed from the neck down for the past 15 years. Barry earned a composite com-posite major in Russian, German and history, (the only one to graduate with three majors), graduated cum laude, with high honors in the honors program, and amassed more than 250 credit hours. Only about half that many are required for graduation. And with all of that, Barry hesitated to hold an interview. .to let us tell his story... because he says, he feels as if he hadn't "accomplished anything," any-thing," that he ."should have finished sooner and a little better." Barry's story began 15 years ago this month. Hobble Creek was ' a raging, rushing, freezing river of rust-colored water. The Clement family, who lived on the south side of the creek at 463 East 400 South, had been building up and reinforcing the banks with a sort of riprap using the rocks from the bottom of the creek. This made the channel somewhat deeper right behind their home. That year, snow fell clear into June and a freak snow storm had hit the area on the weekend, causing a high run-off in Hobble Creek. It was Monday, May 4, and Barry rolled out of bed at 3:30 a.m. to get ready for his 4 a.m. custodial job at BYU. He felt sick and decided he'd better stay home. That afternoon, Mrs. Clement was standing near her kitchen window kneading dough into loaves of bread. A hysterical woman came rushing into the Clement back yard screaming that her child was in the creek. Instinctively Mrs. Clement called for Barry to come and help. Focusing only on the words, "There's a child in the creek," he leaped over the bushes bordering the stream and dove into the water, thinking of what he would do when he surfaced. He heard a "crunch." Almost immediately, his entire body tingled and he knew that his neck was broken. The first to reach him, Mrs. Clement pulled him from the creek, then ran to phone a doctor. Before he was placed on the stretcher for the ride to the hospital, Barry whispered in his mother's ear. "Mother, now when you pray, don't ask for anything special. Just thank Him that I'm alive." (Both Barry and his mother had a premonition of an impending ac cident.. .and the pattern of the weekend changed just enough to let it happen. There was an unseasonably un-seasonably late heavy snow storm. Barry missed a day of work which he ordinarily never did under any circumstance. cir-cumstance. And, of all the yards bordering Hobble Creek, the woman ran into the Clement yard.) Hours later, in painful traction in Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Barry's first words to his mother were, "Mother, have they found the child yet?" "No, but they were still looking when I left," she answered. "I don't think they'll find a child in the creek," he added, already accepting ac-cepting what fate had dealt, but grateful that nobody else was involved and grateful that an act of mercy, and not of frivolity, had left him as he was to be. Grueling, demanding months later, when Barry finally was able to sit in a wheel chair, he began the arduous task of educating himself all over again. He has learned to write with his mouth, although it takes five times longer to fill a page than writing normally by hand. A perfectipnist, he has also learned to type, and at 15-20 15-20 words a minute, spends weeks plunking out a term paper. Years of therapy have developed some upper back muscles so that he can raise his arms, although he still is unable to grasp anything with his hands to perform the daily tasks that most people take for granted. For one whose days had been well ordered and well planned, life included in-cluded school, a mission, marriage, a doctor's degree and a normal life. Barry had no idea that he would be an undergraduate un-dergraduate student longer than it normally took to earn a doctor's degree. But Barry's already back in . school. . .working toward a master's degree in history. ..and, undaunted, un-daunted, he says he's going to earn that doctorate doc-torate yet. Finland has 55,000 lakes.
