Farrell's once-banned classic American trilogy of novels about the boyhood-to-manhood struggles of an Irish-American Irish-American lad in rough-edged Chicago following World War I (the story was considered too racy for the era in which it was published), will be telecast on NBC-TV as a three-part miniseries beginning Wednesday. March 7, and continuing Wednesdays, Wednes-days, March 14 and 21. The characters are raw reflections of their ethnic backgrounds and the triumphant, yet tragic, times in which they lived. The people proud, bigoted, often profane are a passionate pas-sionate and realistic echo of urban America as it used to be. The trilogy has been generally acknowledged as a superb portrayal of the times. Harry Hamlin (pictured) stars in the agonizing title role of the youth who spends his life in the melting pot that was Chicago following World War I and through the Great Depression. Charles Durning and Colleen Dewhurst De-whurst star as Lonigan's parents. - Let us never forget that the cultivation of the earth is the most important im-portant labor of man. When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders foun-ders of civilization. Daniel Webster |
