Show Devils trample Dons gain state berth By Sean Francis Although it was not a thing of beauty, the win gained by the Springville Red Devil basketball team over Spanish Fork last Friday served a purpose, as it assured the Devils a berth in the 3-A State tournament. In winning, 54-37, the Devils also upped their Region Six record to 6-9 and took over fifth place in the league standings. Springville's last regular season game of the year will be held tomorrow, when the Devils hop the bus to St. George for their game with Dixie. The Spanish Fork game, which was the last home game of the year for Springville, was a long, drawn-out affair, with the tediousness directly attributable to the unbelievable amount of fouls called on both sides. Springville had 37 foul shots, 26 of which were made, accounting for almost half of the Devils' entire scoring output. Springville sluggishly moved out to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter, as both teams had extreme difficulty in finding the basket. Both teams connected on three field goals apiece, but Springville retained an edge on the strength of three foul shots. The game became increasingly marred in the second quarter by the referee's happy whistles and the generally sloppy play displayed by both Springville and Spanish Fork. Springville had 11 foul shots this quarter, and was able to stretch the lead to 10, at 24-14, at the half. Spanish Fork came to life in the third quarter, as they managed to get various inside shots, with big men Curtis Evans and Ross Christensen inflicting in-flicting the most damage. The Dons cut the lead to five at 28-23, but. that score marked the end of their chances, as Kenny Howell, Mark Harding and Kevin Sorenson reeled off eight straight points to remove any apprehension. At the end of the third quarter, the Devils led, 36-25. The second half of this quarter was by far the best portion of the game for Springville, as they discontinued their turnovers tur-novers and began to make good shots. The final quarter was yet again made a farce because of all of the unnecessary foul shooting. Springville scored 18 points in this period, which is, indeed, a good scoring quarter. However, they made only four baskets from the field, and the remaining 10 points were on foul shots. Many fans, in fact, found more enjoyment in a practical joke perpetrated per-petrated by unknown fellows in the forth quarter, than in the game inself. The jokers dropped a box of wood shaving from the gym ceiling, covering the visiting teams cheerleaders and pep club causing much havoc. Nevertheless, the game continued, with two technical fouls on Spanish Fork adding to the final 17-point margin acheived by Springville. The Devil bench was cleared, giving every player a chance, as Coach Elliot Jordan was secure in the knowledge his team had amended for the earlier loss to the Dons. jj OPEN DAILY j ;! 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. I; closed Sundays ; Call ahead for reservations ;! !; We rent balls and racquets We sell shoes, balls and racquets ;j nacc,Mot I WfQ Ball Courts Vy 1120 Sooth Main Street (On the old Main Street Road) 489-5298 Spanish Fork's main problem lay in their total coldness from the shooting field. They connected on but 24 percent of their shots, and although Springville didn't shoot hotly either, the foul shots made the difference. Before the game, all of the Red Devil Senior players were introduced, along with their parents. These were: Mark Harding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Harding; Kenny Howell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Howell; Cary Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Hansen; Alan Preston, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Preston; Kevin Sorenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Sorenson; and Fritz Black, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Black. Cary Hansen, who canned 16 points, led all scorers, as he hit 10 of 12 foul shots. But because it replaces the oxygen in enclosed spaces, much like water replaces air in a bottle, a great quantity of natural gas leaking into a person's home could cause suffocation. For this reason and because natural gas is inflammable, we add pungent chemicals, the odor of which enables us to detect the presence of natural gas. The following are procedures you should follow should you detect the presence of natural natu-ral gas in your home. Why not cut them out and tape them inside your telephone directory so you'll always have them if you need them. If the odor is persistent, you should follow these procedures: 3K 1. Do not ignite a flame, use your telephone, operate light switches or use electrical or battery-operated equipment. 2. Ventilate your home by opening windows. 3.
