Disco dance workshop added to dance program Disco dance has been added to the Art City Creative Dance and Gymnastics program, according to Randy and Ann Brown, directors. The workshop begins this week and runs until May 12. Enrollment will continue through January. Students come one hour a week for an 18-week 18-week workshop. Classes for individuals are Monday from 6 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, 7 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 4 to 5 p.m. A partnering class for single or married couples will be Saturday from 5 to 6 p.m. Those interested are invited to come to the class, 34 W. 200 S., and register or telephone Ann Brown at 489-7939. At first Mrs. Brown says she was hesitant to include disco dance because she wanted the historic Reynolds Building to be reserved for artistic purposes. After talking to Steve Spensor who will teach the class, about her goals for disco and her concern for good quality disco instruction, she says she was convinced that the disco classes actually would enhance their program. The public is "aching for good disco instruction", Mrs. Brown says, and she believes they have the "Finest anywhere." Mr. Spensor has danced since age three. He began with tap in Blackfoot, Idaho, with Stan Byington. When he was 12, he took dance from Kathleen Kirham in Pocatello three times a week. At age 14 he began training and performing with the Idaho Junior Ballet Theatre five days a week. In high school he choreographed a musical, but didn't dance as much. He says he feels thatBYU is where he has really trained as a dancer, and is a professional dance major there. A dancer in the original Utah cast of "Saturday's Warrior," Steve was also employed by the Osmond Studios as a dancer for an ABC television special. He has choreographed Doug Stuart's new musical, "The Day the Rain Fell Up," formerly "Latter-day Ruth," has toured two years to various colleges and universities in California with the BYU dancers company, and recently returned from an extensive ex-tensive tour with New York City choregrapher, Douglas Dunn. They toured the west coast, as well as various European cities, including Paris where they danced at the "hottest" discoteque called Theatre LePalace. Mr. Spensor says his goal for the class is to teach not only the basic steps and latest disco routines, but to help each individual discover his own personal style and feel confident that the movement he is doing is aesthetic and acceptable. By the end of the workshop, each student enrolled should find disco dancing natural, so that he feels relaxed on the dance floor. Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy.
