Show January 11, 1979 - The Springville Herald - Page Eleven Sterols mm ...together tfir vicforyo.TOr.PG By Sean Francis The Springville Red Devil Basketball team, after lying in a state of winless limbo for four consecutive games, came alive in a blaze of glory last Friday, as they downed the Pleasant Grove Vikings, 39-32. The Devils will v meet Spanish Fork tomorrow in a renewal of their intense in-tense rivalry, and the game will be held on the Dons' home court at 7:30. Springville now possesses a 2-4 Region Six record and a 4-5 overall record for the season, but if the spark and spirit displayed by the team Friday is any indication, bundles of victories may be in the near future for Devil fans. Springville's strategy in the first quarter was to slow the game to a virtual walk, as they employed a four-corner offense, and took only easy lay-ins as shots. After falling behind 6-2 in the early moments, they made the best shots inside by Cary Hansen, Kenny Howell and Kevin Sorenson, and gained an 8-6 lead at the conclusion of the first stanza, and it was clear the discipline style basketball directed by Coach Elliot Jordan was paying off with much better shots than in past games. The Devils opened up their offense a little more in the second quarter, but as in the first period, good shots were beine taken, especially by Ken Howell, who had three lay-ins this period, pacing the Devils to their J8-16 halftime lead. Mark Atwood, Pleasant Grove's burly guard, carried the bulk of the scoring load this quarter for the Vikes, as he also popped in three fielders. The key to the Devils, lead, however, was not the steady offense, of-fense, but the fine defensive manuevers excuted by Hansen, Mark Harding and Kevin Sorenson. The third quarter was the most exciting for Devil fans and also the best played by their team members. A beautiful steal by Mark Harding, a fine second-effort basket by "Cateye" Hansen and fine rebounding all around exemplified Springville's hustling play. Springville, in fact, extended their lead to its widest margin yet, as they led, 29-22, at the end of the quarter. The momentum of the game, so far in the Devils favor, changed quickly in the last quarter, as two consecutive Devil turnovers tur-novers enabled P.G. to move within three points at 33-30. Dave Ratliff of Pleasant Grove then missed two foul shots, which were very important, im-portant, but Atwood hit two, closing the Devil lead to 1 at 33-32. With 1:15 left to play, Harding found a wide-open lane to the basket, and quick to take advantage, he made a driving layup, sending the Devils up by three. Harding then continued his one-man show of the last minute, as he rebounded Mike Bulow's miss at the foul line, tossed in one foul shot, and made a picturesque pass to Hansen underneath un-derneath for the final basket, which accounted for the 39-32 score, It seemed like before Pleasant Grove knew what had happened, Springville had vented all of its frustrations in the last minute, and the Vikes received the brunt of this attack. Atwood led all scorers with 13, while Harding had 11, Hansen and Howell 8. Sportsmen have elk barbecue Ken HowHI was named Prep of the Week for his fine play against Timpview, a Springville loss. Ken is a senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Howell. He had nine points in the game. More than 250 members of the Springville-Mapleton Springville-Mapleton Wildlife Federation met at the Memorial Hall Saturday night at the annual meeting and election banquet. The group enjoyed a free elk barbeque, a fine program of music and wild game pictures furnished by Kent Keller of Orem, an expert in beautiful outdoor j photography. Local girl completes first SO -mile swim Springville High School sophomore, 15-year-old Brenda Blanchard, holds the honor of being the first to complete 50 miles in the Red Cross sponsored spon-sored Swim and Stay Fit Program at the Community Com-munity Pool here. She accomplished the fete by swimming for the most part, twice daily during workouts as a member of the high school swim team. Her name will go up as number one on the 50-Mile Swim Club Board when it 'is put up in the pool. She receives a gold Red Cross issued pin along with the cards she has received designating each ten miles she reached on her way to the 50 miles. j Brenda reached the half century mark Friday with a half mile over and has signed up and added that half mile to the start of a second 50. , She averaged two and a half to three miles in her daily swims that started Nov. 28. Brenda is the daughter of Carol Blanchard of Springville and Rex Blanchard of the Netherlands. She recently completed the requirements and will receive certification in advanced lifesaving, and she lists swimming as her number one interest. She also enjoys snow skiing and school. Several other swimmers, swim-mers, mainly swim team members are nearing completion. Of the 60 to 70 others in the programs, marks on the chart indicate in-dicate swimmers from those who have 40 miles to those just beginning. Pool Supervisor, Jo Ann De Haas, expressed amazement that the goal was reached so rapidly. She said, the board to display names of those reaching the goal was not ordered as part of the initial equipment needed . to get the pool open and operating. "That will be done in the near future and now we will need to plan space for 100 milers, 150 milers and maybe more boards if needed," she added along with to her congratulations to Brenda for her accomplishment.
