Show it makes cents Dear Vi: Add a marshmallow to hot chocolate in the thermos. It will keep a scum from forming on top Also works when heating milk for a batch of chocolate. A great idea. Here are a few other lunch-box hints for winter days. To clean a vacuum bottle thoroughly, tear newspapers to small bits. Fill bottle with paper bits, hot water, and a little detergent. Shake briskly. This even cleans out brown coffee or fruit stains. Milk tastes better ice cold, Make sure it is by putting the empty thermos and its stopper (separately) in the refrigerator overnight. As we've mentioned before, to keep vacuum bottles sweet and fresh, fill them with water and add some baking soda. Let stand overnight. Are your brown-baggers tired of sandwiches? We got a wide-mouth, pint-size thermos for our son. It's great for soup, chile, stew, etc. He especially enjoys hot soup and crackers instead of sandwiches. Pie travels well in the lunch bucket if you put it in one of those plastic containers designed for that purpose. Cottage cheese with fruit in a small jar with a tight lid is also a good lunch perker-upper. Green salad's a welcome treat if you put the dressing in a separate container. So many changes from sandwiches sand-wiches can be sent with the lunch when the weather's cold and there's no danger of spoilage. Dear Vi : I'm supposed to get extra vitamin A in my diet, so I'm collecting ways to use carrots. I grate them in meat loaves, hamburger patties, and even in bean and tuna casseroles. My family loves a salad of grated carrots; in orange gelatin, and we like almost as well fresh grated carrots and pineapple mixed with mayonnaise for a winter salad. Then, of course, there's carrot cake, carrot cookies, and carrot steamed pudding. Also, crisp carrot sticks set out for snacking disappear faster than candy. It's amazing how many ways there are to get vegetables into the diet when one tries. Cindy Danielson, American Fork, Utah And, Cindy, you didn't mention carrot curls or coarsely grated carrots in a green salad, carrots in turkey stuffing, mashed carrots with cream or buttered carrot strips steamed until just tender with chipped fresh parsley. And, since you're collecting ideas, herels one we're) fond of. Make a sauce of 1 Tbs. sugaV, 1 tsp. 'corn-' starch, grated rind of one orange, "2 tsp. dry mustard, 1-3 cube of margarine and 1-3 cup orange juice, boiled until thick. Pour over sliced carrots cooked until just tender and drained. Do you use a wad of aluminum foil or nylon net to remove the skin so you won't destroy any of that precious vitamin A? Hold the carrots by the tail. The small end's easier to skin that way. Squash, also rich in vitamin A., can also be used in most of the ways mentioned above. Our children turn up their nose at squash. They have no idea how much they eat in cookies, cake, soups, stews, etc. - Dear Vi : Those fabric-bottom coasters in common use today are great for applying stain, wax, or polish. You get a smoother job without stained fingers. A block of wood with felt or carpeting glued to the bottom works just as well in case you don't have any coasters. Just rub if into the sticky spots; the gum washes right out. Salad oil or kerosene will also loosen the gum, but you have the oil stain and bad smell to deal with. Mayonnaise has no such disadvantages. Your friend, Beverly Thanks Bev. Love you for that helpful idea. Thought for the day: If no one loves you, you can be quite certain it's your own fault. i ought to know better by oneita sumsion I once had a boyfriend ! who sent flowers for every occasion, but he was late for every date, f I threw him over for Jim, ! who also was late for every date, but who never sent flowers. I've warned him repeatedly that if he buys me a casket spray, I'll haunt him forever. If I don't warrant flowers when I'm living, I don't want them when I'm dead. Since today is my birthday, I'm reminded of one time when he did send flowers. I had been collecting little colored glaSs vases to display on my window sills and had just about reached the saturation point. When he asked me what I'd like for my birthday, naturally I said, "Well, of course I don't want flowers, and please don't buy me any more colored glass." He came home from work that night with a big cone-shaped package and a smaller one shaped like a shoe box. I carefully unwrapped the newspaper trappings, which revealed a large bouquet of dried sunflower centers. I unwrapped the shoe box shaped package. It was a shoe box! I gingerly lifted the lid and inside lay a green 7-up bottle carefully wrapped in paper towels. On the bottom was a note "Sorry, I couldn't find any fresh flowers in January. But I just couldn't resist the colored glass!" And just to remind me that my husband once sent flowers, I kept that 7-up bottle sitting around in our living liv-ing room holding dried sunflower centers for many a month.
