"Yea . scrud. but nobody's gonna believe us." But the fact is kids it's true. My own two red heads, John and Phil and their next-door-neighbor friend Brent Ivie, sat right next to Johnny Whitaker last Thursday night while I interviewed him. And not only did the boys get to see Johnny Whitaker but they got to ask him a few questions of their own. Questions like, "How did you get in the movies?" "What sports do you like ' best?" "Is your hair really that curly or have you had a permanent?" "How old are you?" "What does it seem like to be a movie star?" "Where did the boat go in 'Tom Sawyer'?" I had never interviewed a "real live movie star" before, so I took my redheads red-heads along to help sort of ease the tension. After all, Johnny's movies had been made for the young and the young at heart, so I thought my kids might have more in common with him than I would have. And Johnny Whitaker turned out to be a real person- cordial and gracious with his responses. ..like he was talking to someone he had known for a very long time. ..like he was patiently answering an-swering silly questions put to him by his little brothers. ..like he was talking with the same ease a son would talk to his mother. We had waited for him for 45 minutes or so before he came running in to shake our hands, all the while apologizing for his tardines . He had a late class at BYU which arrangers of the interview hadn't counted on. We met him at the Villa on his terms, because, he said, he couldn't bear to come to my office at the Herald in a , "Well, here I am! Interview me!" type of gesture. We sat and talked casually for some time, though not nearly long enough for my boys, before he was called to rehearsal. He kept us all spell-bound. And anyone who knows my two redheads red-heads and Brent Ivie knows how difficult dif-ficult it is to keep them sitting quietly for very long. Movie stars, from a distance had always seemed so far-removed from the human race. Like they didn't need to go to school or study or wash their hair or brush their teeth or'feed the dog or water the lawn or eat supper or a dozen or so other things that common folks have to do every day. But let me assure you that at least one movie star, Johnny Whitaker, does have to go to school. Right now, Johnny goes to BYU where he is earning a composite major in humanities and foreign language communications and in cinematography and dramatic arts. He can speak French and Spanish and is now working on the Russian language. He has also taught sign language. Johnny believes it is important im-portant for him to learn to communicate com-municate with all people, including those who speak other languages and even those who can't hear his voice. His thick red hair is absolutely his very own-no wig--no permanent-no hair dye. He simply shampoos it shakes it, and it falls into place. A photography buff, Johnny says his sports interests lie mainly in one-person one-person sports, such as skiing. Oh, he likes competitive sports well enough, he says, but doesn't enjoy the football, basketball scene as much as he likes single person sports. Johnny has performed for as long as he can remember. And from all indications in-dications he certainly is just as much at ease in front of a camera or in front of a live audience as he is on a one-to -one basis. Acting is "just another job," he says. It's "just work," he explained, as he added he has always worked in front of a camera or in front of people. In fact, his career began at the tender age of three when he sang "I Am A Child of God" in a Primary program. A woman in the audience heard him and asked his mother how she would like to have him in the movies. It took some persuasion, he said, but she finally consented and he has been acting ever since. And how do all you eager young prospective actors get nto the movies? Just work, he says. The best school in the world is "working." Some people can go to acting school forever and? never make it. Others have that in-born talent and can make it by just working at it. Johnny Whitaker has that in-born talent. But he's still an all-American Boy. He could be the boy nextdoor..the kid down the street.. .the rowdy in your class. ..or the bookworm that you hardly ever notice. He could even be your brother because that's just what he seemed like to me. But you can all form your own opinions of Johnny Whitaker when you see him in "Star Spangled Girl" opening November 2 at the Villa Theatre in Springville. Hope we see you there. After "Star Spangled Girl" Johnny plans to put his career on the shelf for a couple of years while he fills a mission for the LDS Church. "Israel, Armageddon and the Second Coming" will be presented by David and Toni Handy The public is invited. "Israel, Armageddon and the Second Coming" is a unique, multimedia presentation which utilzes narration, slides, orchestrated background music and live vocal numbers in Hebrew and English. Past and current eyents in the Middle East are highlighted to show the involement of the LDS Church in the prophetic return of the Jews and the rise of the modern State of Israel. These happenings hap-penings are part of the signs of the times that point toward the nearness of Armageddon and the Second Coming. This special program has been used for Ward, Stake, and Regional Firesides, as well as Youth Conferences and Teachers' Conventions for Seminary-Institute personnel. The information for the Fireside has been gathered over many years of research and the actual presentation takes l' t hours. The slides are actual "location shots" from Israel. The narration is accompanied by a musical background-iwhich background-iwhich is a combination of LDS Hymns, Israeli Folk Songs (in Hebrew and English) and music composed by Toni. The intent of the Fireside is to motivate people spirtiually and j leave them with several key inpressions: 1. The prophecies relating to the return of the Jews are being rapidly fulfilled. 2. Many of our living Prophets have been involved in-volved in the events that have led to the restoration of the Holy Land to the Jews and the establish ment of the State of Israel. 3. Current events in the Mid-East are part of the signs of the times that point to "the nearness of the 2nd coming. 4. We, as members of the Church, need to be preparing for the coming events through a more intensive study of the scriptures and a stronger determination to follow the counsel of the Lord's living Prophet. The multi-region young adults will be hosting a Halloween party and dance on Friday, October 27 to be held at the Mapleton town hall at approximately 55 East Maple Street.
