'The Taming of the Shrew' currently playing in Provo In a limited, nine night engagement, Valley Centre Theatre is presenting Shakespeare's famous comedy, "The Taming of the Shrew." Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through April 30. The community-oriented theater is located at 60 N. Third W., Provo. Ray B. Jones, drama instructor at Provo High School, will direct the production and has selected Provoans Tayva Patch and Nathan Lewis to play the key roles of Katherine and Petruchio. "Many people are afraid of Shakespeare but shouldn't be," commented Jody Renstrom, wife of producer, Keith Renstrom. "The ideas he wrote about are timeless; 'Taming' has been the basis for numerous other plays including the musical "Kiss Me Kate." The comedy opens when an Italian gentleman decides to marry off his two daughters. Bianca, the charming younger daughter, will be portrayed by Lisa Hill. The eldest daughter, Katherine, a cursed shrew, must be married off before Bianca is allowed to wed. Because Katherine is wealthy, a young gentleman named Petrucio decides to woo her, not realizing that he would fall in love. The "taming" of Katherine without breaking her spirit forms the basis of this timeless comedy. This game of high spirits depicts much of the lifestyle evident in Shakespeare's era. Elaborate velvet and satin costumes have been acquired for the production and set designers Lyon and Doug Stone have constructed a marbled pattern floor and arches for an elegant court setting. Nebo School District has released the proposed calendar for the school year 1977-78. The calendar was accepted by trie school board at its last meeting.
