Show Red Devils ran Page Twelve The Springville Herald January 22, 1976 devik meei Amemm forh fri$y; Leopards 40-11 By Grant Skabelund Springville Red Devils will be looking for their third Region Six win and a major upset when they host the unbeaten American ports Fullmer scorches Lions in contest By Grant Skabelund Mark Fullmer burned the Payson High Gymnasium nets ' last Friday night, as he scored 29 points in leading the Springville Red Devils to a 66-49 basketball victory over the Payson Lions. ; Springville went on a Lion hunt and nabbed their prey, as well as winning their second Region Six game. The Red Devils are now 2-4 in Region Six action and they posess a 4-7 record for the season. Fullmer did not miss a shot until the fourth quarter. The 6'3" senior hit 10 of 11 shots from the field for a fantastic 91 percent. He did not to it all alone though, as Gregg Smith had eight assists and Scott Phillips scored 14 points. The entire Red Devil squad hit a superb 53 percent from the floor and 89 percent from the foul-line. Both figures, especially the free-throw shooting, are large improvements im-provements over earlier games. Springville opened the game playing with extreme sluggishness. Payson led 14-11 at the end of the first period. The Red Devils then flexed their muscles and started working as a unit in the second quarter. Payson led by two about halfway half-way through the stanza, when Fullmer converted two buckets into three-point plays and the Devils took over the led for good. The Springville big man had 11 points in the second period. r Payson opened up the third quarter with two long outside shots by Steve Wilson and it looked as if the Lions might make a comeback. Coach Joe James' squad recorded five pins, as they defeated their Cavemen opponents in all but three matches. The Red Devils victory placed them on top of the heap, along with Uintah in the Region Six standings. Springville sports a 3-0 3-0 league record, while tallying a 6-4 showing for the season. Springville will battle Pleasant Grove, for the probably second place spot in the region, tonight in the Viking's gym at 7:30. All Red Devil fans are urged to journey to Pleasant Grove and support the Springville grapplers. Springville's lightweights, proved to be the Red Devil's blitzkrieg, as brothers Kerry (100) and Craig Wilson (114) and Scott Zufelt (107) pinned Jheir rivals to put the Devils out in front early in the duel match. Kerry laced Mark Eager up after only 1 : 10 had expired in the first round, while Craig pinned Scott Boley at the 1:30 mark. Zufelt had a tougher time, as he put Val Belnap down with 18 seconds remaining in the match. Springville's two other pins were scored by Stuart Clark (140) and Sheldon Anderson (UNL. Clark forced Jimmy Dixon's shoulders to the mat at the second period buzzer, while Anderson turned Jeff Loveland over in the second period. Duane Nielson (121) had two near-falls, but could not pin Stan Shelly, as he won a 10-2 decision. Sterling Ottensen tied the score at 3-3 with an escape from Red Devil Chad Curtis (157) in the thiri stanza. Curtis quickly nabbed a takedown and a 5-3 decision over his Caveman opponent. Eric Weight's (169) score sounded more like a football game, as he toppled Jeff Rank 21-8 for a superior decision. Big Jack Elmer (187) struggled to a 3-3 draw with Ricky Nelson and Dan Doty (137) won by a forfeit to conclude the Red Devil's scAririK. Springville's Junior Varsity squad defeated American Fork's JV team 42-20 in their match. Scoring pins for the Red Devil's was: Boyd Russel (100) Ernie Mallahan (121), Dave Wilson (128), Jeff Fish (130) and Mark Koontz (140. lead to 10 at the end of the third frame. Springville was forced to foul with 14 seconds remaining in the contest and Brent Alvey hit free throws to ice the game for the Lions. A disastrous second quarter spelled destruction for the Springville Red Devil last Wednesday night. Pleasant Grove outscored the Devils 27-7 in the second period and rolled to a 72-59 win in the Region Six contest. The Vikings placed all of its starting five in double figures to topple the Red Devils, but the main factor was Pleasant Grove's red-hot shooting and Springville's cold fingertips in the second stanza. Layne Butt scored nine of his game total 12 points to lead the second quarter surge, when the Vikings hit 10 of 19 field goal attempts compared to two of 19 for Springville. Wes Ruff hit three buckets in the first period to keep Springville within one point at 15-14. Ruff had 10 points in the game. Then came the Vikings white-streak, when they hit 58 percent of their shots from the floor and leaped to a 42-21 halftime lead. Springville out scored Pleasant Grove 16-15 in the third frame.
