D ALTON Do you know how "Uncle Sam" got his name? Apparently no one else does, either, according ac-cording to Robert Bishop, expert on early American history, but ' there are stories. During the war of 1812 the letters E.A.U.S. were stamped on government supply wagons. E.A. for the contractor and U.S. for the government inspector whose name was Sam Wilson. "E.A. and Uncle Sam" was a natural outgrowth, then "Uncle Sam" became the final title. Bartlett's Dictionary of Americanisms (1848) states Another national name growing out of common use in "Uncle Sam" source unknown. But since World War I, this gentleman, who personifies the United States, has been pointing a forefinger from a poster in' front of Post Offices throughout the country and fixing all who pass with a commanding look while saying "I want You! " Now I used to think as we passed the Post Office on the way to elementary school, that he meant me, personally and I had some uneasy moments. How could one not take that look personally when that was exactly what the popular illustrator, James Montgomery Flagg had in mind, when he painted the poster about 1916. Many young men were mesmerized into joining up immediately. So even if Uncle Sam's origin is somewhat hazy, this bearded, long-legged gentleman will appear in many pageants and parades this year, garbed in his red and white stripped trousers, blue cut-away and tall hat To us, he's a symbol of courage and dependability and whether he wants us or not, we, : want him. Trent Marshall Denison, son of E. Darnell and Virginia Gurr Denison of Renton, Washington, formerly of Springville, will celebrate his first birthday January 26. Trent has one brother, Bart. His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Eugene J. Gurr of Springville and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest S. Denison of San Angelo, Texas.
