Editorial HI Motorists, stop for school buses! Complaints regularly are received in this office by school bus drivers stating that motorists in Springville and often "fail to stop" for busses with blinking lights. Each morning, according to the bus drivers, motorists, anxious to get to school or work, are bent on "beating the bus" by stepping on the gas and "gunning" it past a bus in the process of stopping. Some motorists even go so far as to make U turns in front of stopped busses, said one school bus driver. Each Fall, when school begins, the Utah Safety Council and local police departments issue varied news releases urging motorists to drive carefully and save the life of school child. Many of them oblige, at least for a while. Then carelessness sets in and chances are taken. Teenagers and adults alike are guilty of breaking this law, bus drivers say. And, it seems, they are not about to stop the practice until some child gets injured in-jured or killed. The worst offenders, bus drivers state, are those who pass stopped busses while unloading at schools. And since there are not any "No passing" signs posted near the schools, perhaps motorists don't think the rule applies there. The police departments in both cities have been exceptionally good to follow busses. And just as long 1 as they do so, there are no offenders. But offenders often are more alert watching for police cars than they are for children getting off busses. Perhaps they do not quite fathom the seriousness of nor the end results of maiming a child. We would suggest, as do the bus drivers, that police post "No Passing" signs in front of schools on city streets and that they religiously ticket and fine offenders until they grasp the meaning of this lawn Of course, we feel that motorists should exhibit maturity and should not have to be followed around like children. But if this is what it takes to teach them the law, then this is what must be done. iff sayi III REPORT OF CONDITION OF CENTRAL BANK & TRUST COMPANY ... ! - of Springville, Utah County, Utah, at the close of business on December 31, 1975.
