Several inquiries from racers in these three states have been received already by officials of-ficials of the event. Competition will be held in all classes of events, and special stunts are planned to make the regatta more interesting for spectators. spec-tators. Even larger than the Memorial Day regatta will be the Fourth of July event, which will be held in connection with Provo's Independence Independ-ence Day celebration. With I'rovo city cooperating, large trophies will be awarded winners in every event, according to Bern us' Bills, chairman of the regatta. , After the interest shown in the racing events last year, Provo Boat club officials expect even more enthusiasm this year, with probably a record number of contestants con-testants as well as a larger crowd than in 1940. j Provo Boat club is j a member of the Utah State Boating association, asso-ciation, and the two regattas are approved by the racing commission commis-sion of the association. Utah Lake BY GLEN GARDNER In utilizing the opportunities that Utah lake offers in the way of outdoor activities, the Sea Scouts of the S. S. S. Hanno, ship 5016, are planning an extensive ex-tensive spring and summer lake activity program. Since the installation of the Hanno sea scout ship in Trovo, the scouts have acquired three serviceable boats and built themselves them-selves a private harbor at the mouth of the river. Further plans are underway to obtain a fourth boat to meet the needs of the increasing in-creasing membership. Beginning the last of this month, when the three boats will be . completely renovated and ready for use, a regular scheduled activities program will be carried out at the lake. These activities will include two over-night cruises for all the scouts each month; a council and ship regatta, a ship boating and swimming carnival; participation in regattas sponsor ed by the Frovo Boat club, and duty as a safety patrol. In connection- with their lake activities, the Hanno will em phasize water safety as a part of their program. The ship officers report that they are at present compiling a set of rigid safety rules which will be employed by the sea scouts in all their sed lore practices. Also as a part of their program, the scouts will maintain a " safety patrol on the Utah Lake Gains Attention As Recreation Boating Site Utah lake, long known as a mecea for catfish and carp fishing, fish-ing, duck and geese hunting, and swimming, has of recent years become a center for a sport that now surpasses the others for interestboating. in-terestboating. The lake's reputation as a boating boat-ing center reaches beyond Utah valley, for outstanding boaters from Salt Lake City and many other "outside" cities choose this large body of fresh water when they want an afternoon of super boating. Boat-building has become a major activity hereabouts of recent re-cent years as steadily more and more outdoor lovers enter the boating circle. Each Sunday thousands of people peo-ple are seen at the lake, hundreds of them boating and hundreds of others, just boating fans, watching watch-ing the crafts speed through the shimmering waters from the batiks. Boats or all kinds can be seen at the lake outboards, inlwards, hydroplanes, cruisers, show boat, house boats, and speed boats of all descriptions. Great impetus is being give the boating sport by the activities of the Frovo Boat club and by the million-dollar boat harbor and metropolitan park being sponsored sponsor-ed at the edge of the lake near the Provo river channel by Provo city in cooperation with the national na-tional park service, department of interior. While construction of a splendid lake on week ends and holidays this summer. The interest of the sea scout in the development of the Utah lake harbor project as a recreational center has been shown during the past year through their active participation in all regattas held to date on the lake. "Our group feels that in the completion of this reclamation project, this community will be greatly benefited through its vulue as a recreation center," Skipper Deb Tregeagle said. A fully rigged sail boat and camping equipment will be featured fea-tured in a sea scout exhibit at the first Utah county boat show Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The building of the Bail boat and the making of the camp equipment equip-ment has been work completed by the sea scouts as a part of their winter program to prepare for summer activities. boat harbor is perhaps the major item of the project, there'll be many more improvements, such as construction of a caretaker's residence and combination building, build-ing, development of a fine beach with swimming facilities including includ-ing bath houses, improvement of picnicing grounds and facilities, etc. One phase of the project which has already greatly abetted the boaters was the straightening, widening and deepening of a half mile of the Provo river channel. The harbor itself, located just north of the Provo river channel, will cover an area of 13 acres. Some seven and a half feet of earth fill have been placed around the harbor area, raising the land elevation and making a difference differ-ence of 15 fret in the haibor-bottom haibor-bottom elevation and the ground level. The elevation around the harbor will be three feet above compromise point. From the inland harbor's edge, a 250-foot-wide channel has Wen dredged out into the lake for more than a quarter of a mile. It will be extended another quarter of a mile when the harbor is ready for use. Officials of me project report that the harbor excavation likely will be completed this year. It is expected that actual use of the harbor will begin in 1942 or 1943.
