MANAHA BOYD SORENSEN Japanese Youth Offered American College Education TOKYO, Dec. 24 (HE) -A Louis iana doctor hai offered an Amer ican college education to a Japanese Jap-anese youth whose father, a boatman, boat-man, was drowned in Tokyo bay a year ago with United Press vice president Miles W. Vaughan and another American. Takayuki Horiuchl, 23, said Saturday he received the offer in a letter from Dr. Fred J. Mayer of Erath, La., and hopes to take advantage of it. He said Dr. Mayer was a friend of the third victim in the bay tragedy of Jan. 31, 194& Maj. T. R. Haddock. H a d do c k ana Vaughn were on a duck-hunting trip when their boat overturned. The Japanese boatman, Kenji Horiuchi, was drowned with them. Young Takayuki said his father used to take Mayer and Haddock duck-hunting in Tokyo bay in his boat when Mayer was In Japan as an army medical oflfcer. The boy was working in Mayer's ' hospital at the time, and accompanied them on the trips. "I told them once that I would like to study in an American uni versity, and they listened to me very sympathetically," he said. He said he is very happy, now that his wish seems to be coming true. ' Dr. Mayer, in his letter, offered him a lob until such times as his English is good enough for medi cal school or hospital lnternsmp. BLUEBIRDS FOR HAFFINE81 - BALDWIN, Ga.
