Jill Case proudly displays her record breaking black marlin fiberglass mount on the wall of the Bull Ring's show room in Vernal. A plaque beside her trophy fish reads, "Costa Rico Women's Record for Black Marlin, Jill Case, February 2008." "It took one and a half hours to land the 12-foot fish," Case said. "An hour into it, I was beat." Marlins are know, for their acrobatics, jumping and diving when hooked. This one did so at least 30 times said Case. "I tried to hand off the pole, but no one would take it," she explained. "Finally, one of the deck hands pointed to the flotilla of boats surrounding us. He saidanyone of those guys would love to take your fish." "That did it, I got a second wind and muscled the bad-boy in myself," she declared. As fish stories go, Case's is even more striking considering she landed the 725 pound black marlin on a 30 pound test line without using a chair. It's catch-and-release fishing for black marlin off the coast of Costa Rica. Case simply had to bring the fish to the side of the boat so deck hands could measure its girth and length. "I could barely stand to look over the side at the fish before they released it," Case laughs. "It was two days before I hold so much as a fork." It took about two months before her mount was completed, which now graces the wall of her business at 1801 West Highway 40 in Vernal.
