Airport update offered to Chamber of Commerce By Ryan Allen Express Writer Members of the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce learned about the Vernal regional Airport on June 17 at Golden Corral. Airport Manager Kelly Harvey Har-vey spoke about what's happening happen-ing at the airport. He discussed not only the current happenings, but plans for the future. He exlained that the airport has split ownership, with Uintah Uin-tah County owning 75 percent and Vernal owning the other 25 percent. Then the budget for the airport was discussed. Uintah County and Vernal City, the owners own-ers of the airport, fund a portion of the annual budget. The rest of the budget comes from funding provided to the airport by the Federal Aviation Administration. Administra-tion. The FAA funds about 95 percent of the annual budget, while owners fund the other 5 percent. Another item brought up by Harvey was what is called an Airport Layout Plan. The plan helps to develop how owners and engineers will develop the airport's future needs and developments. de-velopments. The next topic was what is called an Airport Improvement Plan, which is necessary for the airport to acquire grants. Any airport is eligible for these grants as long as they meet two criteria. First, the airport must be owned by a private owner. While the airport is owned by public agencies, it is considered privately owned for the purposes of federal grants. Second, the airport must get at least 2,500 takeoffs and landings. Last year the Vernal Regional Airport had more than 4,000 planes come in and out. Therefore, the airport meets both of the set criteria. People in attendance had questions about the destinations or stops that planes leaving Vernal Regional Airport make. Commercial air service from Vernal connects to Denver. Some at the meeting thought it would be better if flights stopped in Salt Lake City as well. Flights to denver are provided as part of a subsidized Essential Air Service Program. Because the commercial carrier is selected but a federal bidding process, local airport management and elected officials have little control over the destination. Harvey has indicated that he is working with officials to develop a Salt Lake connection. Vernal Regional Airport has met the requirements for its Part 139 certification. The certification is required for the airport to have commercial air service. Currently, this service is provided to Vernal by Great Lakes Airlines. c- V5 A'TfW 1 V i si .0 Y Rodeo & Concert rr. , A ...
