Show A10 Wednesday, January 30 2008 Vernal Express J CO ' The districts annual Klondike Derby was held last weekend at Bacon Park with an overnight stay in luxurious conditions that included tents with snow on the sides and bottom. Aplus for last weeks excursion for some 230 scouts and leaders who attended the event, was that temperatures were warmer than they had been" for weeks and that made the stay in 20 inches of snow just that much better. "Maybe it didn't even get to 0," stated camp chairman Gilbert Kynaston as he laughed after surviving another winter camp. "Warmer and more snow! What more can you ask for!" There were 20 troops represented rep-resented at the camp with 123 boys, 61 leaders, 19 members of the Order of the Arrow and 10 staff members. Scouts started arriving on Friday and all were settled in well after dark. ' Saturday morning started off with a flag ceremony and competition com-petition events. This year there were ten events that included: fire building Map and compass Sled Run Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing Knot tying First Aid Height and Distance Emergency Signs Caterpillar crawl or the 2x4 walk. Winners were declared after tallying up the points earned at each of the events. First place went to Troop 233 - Vernal 1st Ward with 97 points. . Second place was earned by troop 235, Naples 1st Ward with 91 points. Troop 235 earned third place, Davis 1st Ward with 89 points. This district sponsors three annual camps.
