As is typical, the Local Official's Day at the Legislature was on the first Wednesday of the legislative session. The Utah Legislature opened on Monday, Jan. 21 and will last 45 days, ending on March 5. During the Local Official's Day, city officials and youth city councils across the state had the opportunity to meet with state legislators. This year, the Vernal Youth City Council toured the newly renovated State Capitol where the legislature meet this year after three years in a different differ-ent building on Capitol Hill while the Capitol was remodeled. While at the Capitol, VYCC members had the opportunity to listen in on House and Senate Sen-ate Standing Committee meetings meet-ings on such things as natural resources and revenue and taxation. Students also met and briefly visited with Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman who gave students advice to "follow their hearts." After the Capitol tour, the youth city councils congregated at the Grand America Hotel where editorial cartoonist for Salt Lake Tribune, Patrick Bagely, gave a speech on politics, media and cartoons. "Think about what those presidential campaigns are saying," say-ing," Bagely advised. "Try to get past those slogans. Just because you hear it over and over again, think about what they are saying. Think for yourselves." Following Bagely's speech, local representatives and youth city council members were served a lunch in the Grand America Grand Ballroom. The Vernal local officials and youth city council were joined by Utah State Senator Kevin Van Tassell and Utah State Representative John Mathis, both representing Uintah County. Governor Huntsman spoke during lunch. "We're top of the heap and that is exactly where we should be and that starts with you," Huntsman told youth city councils. coun-cils. "Myonlyrequestistakeyour responsibility very seriously." A speech was also given by President George W. Bush impersonator, im-personator, Steve Bridges who gave a speech posing as President Bush. The Utah League of Cities and Towns celebrated its 100th year last year since the initial organization organi-zation in 1907. Official legislation was signed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives on Wednesday documenting the ULCT centennial. The board of the ULCT is comprised of 19 members representing municipalities munici-palities and regions in the state. They work towards creating public awareness of municipal administration, responsibilities and government. Vernal council member JoAnn Cowan serves on the ULCT Board of Directors as a representative of Vernal City.
