Show V A6 Wednesday, April 18, N.W. Colorado and N.E. Utah compete in 6th annual Science and Engineering Fair By Becky Dubbert Guest Writer Over 70 participants from Rangely and Vernal Middle Schools competed for prizes and scholarships at Colorado Northwestern's 6th annual Science and Engineering Fair. Projects ranged from home-built home-built batteries and scale home models, to materials for oil spill cleanup, and bacteria in water supplies. Vernal Middle School instructor in-structor Jill Howells, who has participated in the Science Fair for the last three years, loves the enthusiasm for science sci-ence the fair builds and how her students are treated at the fair. "The kids can't stop talking talk-ing about it. Colorado Northwestern North-western really rolls out the red carpet for these students, " she stated. In addition to the fair, students were treated to a series of explosive chemistry demonstrations and were able to hold a human brain as they toured Colorado Northwestern's Northwest-ern's science department. Many Vernal residents participated par-ticipated in the fair, including Andrew Clark who won Best of Show and a $750 scholarship scholar-ship for building a series of Evan Sharp, son of David and Liz Sharp, partnered with Jenna Lindsey, daughter of Dan and Debbie Lindsey, to win 1 st place at the Science Fair held at CNCC in Rangely. CNCC Science Department Chair and Biology Instructor . Dr. Todd Ward expressed his appreciation for the students involved. "It is amazing the level of commitment shown by these students and their mentors. men-tors. I know how busy students can get with all of their outside projects, especially in small communities such as ours. It is a real treat to be able to share and experience their gifts and achievements." Answer by: Loralie Cox , Utah State University Extension Ex-tension Horticulture Agent, Cache County Many people who love to grow plants and flowers must compromise their yearnings if they have lim ited yard space or live m an apartment building. However, Howev-er, container gardening has become a popular option for those with limited gardening space and has evolved into a form of landscape art. With proper placement, containers can produce instant in-stant color and interest in a yard or garden. Ordinary plant materials can take on a whole new look, drawing attention to plant colors, textures and forms. By following basic design- principles, even a beginning gardener can create and manage beautiful contain ers. The most important over all principle of design is unity. uni-ty. It gives the sense that all parts are working together to achieve a common result. Consider these other design principles when planting in containers. To avoid becoming a victim of dating violence, consider the following tips: Spend time together in groups where you can observe a potential dating partner inavariety of settings. Plan structured activities where you are not spending time just "hanging out." Expect Ex-pect to be respected. Always tell someone who you will be with and where you plan to go. Avoid anyone who gets angry or jealous, blames others, threatens, manipulates, humiliates, hu-miliates, intimidates, isolates, picks fights or abuses animals. Use contrasting colors, textures or shapes that call attention to a specific point. Balance gives a sense of equilibrium or stability and is achieved either symmetrically sym-metrically or asymmetrically. asymmetri-cally. Create symmetrical or formal balance by arranging elements equally on either side of a central axis so there are mirror images. Achieve asymmetrical or informal balance by placing objects of varying visual weight around a pivotal point. Shape is the plant's overall appearance.
