The Public Works office is also in charge of decorating Dina and Rex for the holidays, putting lights on the Maeser Highway at 500 North and 500 West, and putting up decorations, decora-tions, trees and lights in Cobble Rock Park. Five large trees are put in the park, with one for each elementary ele-mentary school to make decorations deco-rations for. Most years at least several schools participate in the decorating. "We always hope they all will," said Glade Allred director of public works in Vernal. "Checking bulbs, getting ready, putting up and taking down decorations is a three month project, but for a small town, we try to do a good job," said Allred. "I think it says a lot about our community," said Allred. "Many times over the years there are people from outside that have said Vernal is just an oil town on the edge of Utah. Now I hear all the time, 'What you have done to change the perspective of those who visit is astounding."' Allred said that people who visit can't see how good your water system or school district is. What people see, said Allred, is how clean your city is and the civic pride that is shown. "All of those things make a difference dif-ference to people looking in from the outside. We take pride in being an oil town, but we take pride in being the best oil town we can."
