Show AJedndaMJoveniber1Z006 Vernal Express Obituaries Elvyn Ira Bascom ' Elvyn Ira Bascom, age 92, of Lapoint, formerly of Roosevelt, passed away Nov. 12, 2006, at his son's home in Lapoint surrounded sur-rounded by family. He was born April 13, 1914, in Vernal, to Ira Kimbell and Alice Rasmussen Bascom. He lived for three years in Sunnyside as a young boy, moving back to Vernal with his parents after his father was injured in a mining min-ing accident He attended school in Vernal until he had to quit to provide for his family. He had many different jobs including mining min-ing coal, making saddles, and helping the farmers with then-crops then-crops and animals. He did go back later and make up all his credits in order to receive his high school diploma. He married Venice Manwaring on Nov. 29, 1937, in the Salt Lake IDS Temple. She died April 8, 1998. Elvyn had an interest in beekeeping bee-keeping at age 14. This was a "sweet" hobby until he was not able to do it anymore because of health problems at age 89. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. He and Venice served two missions, the first in the Indian Mission here in the Basin and then in 1983 in Atlanta Georgia. Upon returning, return-ing, they served as temple workers in the Provo Temple for 10 years. He is loved and honored for his unconditional love and his example of true dedication to his church and family. His legacy of faith will always be remembered. One of Elvyn's greatest joys was that of being with and experiencing life with his grandchildren. They always enjoyed trekking with him around many states, traveling with him to and from Provo, Barbara Banks Adams Barbara Banks Adams passed away peacefully at her home Monday, Nov. 13, 2006. She was 90 years of age. Barbara was born Oct. 29, 1916 in Vernal, Utah to William Alva and Anna King Banks. She was the youngest of five children. chil-dren. Barbara attended grade school in Vernal and graduated from Westminster High School in Salt Lake City at the age of 16. She attended Westminster College for two years and studied stud-ied piano at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago for one year. She completed com-pleted her music education at the McCune School of Music at the University of Utah and graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in music. After graduation she taught piano and performed professionally in Salt Lake City and Vernal. Barbara married Lewis Forrest Adams on August 2, 1941 in Vernal. He preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1966. She and Lewis moved to Meeker, Colo, in 1950 and owned and operated the Adams Lodge Guest Ranch on Marvine Creek in the White River National Forest. In 1959 they moved to Grand Junction. Barbara loved music and passed to her children and grandchildren a love of music, especially piano. Her favorite composers were Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She played their music almost daily. She was a piano teacher, an accomplished seamstress and excelled at making mak-ing pies. Barbara always cared and loved to spend time with her daughters, her grandchildren grandchil-dren and great-grandchildren. She loved shopping, especially for family and friends. Barbara was a community volunteer and supported many charitable chari-table causes. She was a member mem-ber of the First Congregational Church and P.E.O. chapter DY. In addition to her husband, " I : - -i 1 S y , VX. , Keith L Squire Elvyn I. Bascom singing songs and laughing, going to the bee yard to watch him "rob" the bees of their golden honey, then chewing the honey out of the honeycomb while watching him extract the honey. Also they enjoyed picking apricots and apples for canning. Later in life as health problems slowed him down the visits from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren would always bring his famous smile. He is greatly loved and will be deeply missed. Elvyn is survived by his children, chil-dren, Gordon Elvyn (Sharee) Bascom, West Haven; Wilda (Norman) Tanner, Mapleton; Glen David (Louise) Bascom, Lapoint; Dale Brent Bascom, Glendale; Kent Ray Bascom, Los Angeles, Calif.; 30 grandchildren, grand-children, 61 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Venice; 3 brothers, 1 sister, daughter-in-law, Karen Green Bascom; grandson Ty Bascom; and a great-granddaughter Jaydee Lynn King. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at the Lapoint LDS Chapel. Friends and family may call at the Hullinger Mortuary on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in the Lapoint Cemetery. V Barbara Banks Adams Lewis, her brothers, Claudius Banks and Harold "Bus" Banks, and sisters, Helen Banks and Margaret Shirley preceded her in death. Her two daughters and their spouses and her five grandchildren grandchil-dren and four great-grandchildren survive her. Her daughters surviving are Sally Prinster and husband, Anthony of Grand Junction; Susan Adams and husband, Ted Waitkus of Boulder, Colo. Her grandchildren grandchil-dren are Stephanie Prinster Mottram (Jon) of Denver, Colo; Sarah Prinster (husband (hus-band John Coombs) of Incline Village, N.Y.; Antonia Prinster Chaffee (Michael) of Golden, Colo.; Forrest Timothy Adams of Boulder, Colo, and Kristin Waitkus of Boulder, Colo.; and her four great-grandchildren are Josie Lynn Mottram and Andrew Lewis Mottram, Katarina Antonia Chaffee and Alexander Carlton Chaffee. A memorial service will be held at The First Congregational Church, 1425 North 5th Street, Grand Junction, Colo, on Friday, Nov. 17, 2006 at 3 p.m. Private burial will take place at Vernal Cemetery, Vernal, Utah. Keith L. Squire Keith L. Squire, age 77, of Vernal, died peacefully at home on Nov. 1, 2006 surrounded by his family. He was born in Manti, Utah June 3, 1929 to Franklin D. and Rulla Squire. He married Carole Siddoway on July 5, 1951. Keith had one daughter, Deborah Squire Mayes. He has three grandsons grand-sons and four great-grandchildren, James Spence Mayes, Keith Patrick Mayes, and Jonn Trevor Mayes. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he served in several organizations. He had a "love" for basketball which led him to play church basketball, with his team winning state several times. He and his wife also served as dance directors in their ward with the youth. He worked hard on his cattle ranch raising pure breed Black Steven Daniel Hamilton 1943-2006 Loving father and grandfather grandfa-ther passed away in his home in Dinosaur, Colo., Nov.6, 2006. Steve loved hunting, fishing, family and his dogs. Steve will be missed by all who knew him. Steve was preceded pre-ceded in death by his parents, three brothers and infant son, Scott Hamilton. Steve is survived by his children, chil-dren, Melissa (Charlie) Beagle, Eric (Brandi) Hamilton, Cheri Hamilton, and Michelle Hamilton; grandchildren Teresa Southam Teresa Southam Teresa Tanner Southam, age 42, of Carlin, Nev., died Nov. 6, 2006 at home. She was born Jan. 28, 1964 in Vernal, to Max and Virginia Jenkins Tanner. Teresa married Dean Southam, Aug. 6, 1988. Teresa and Dean lived in Carlin since 198 following follow-ing Dean's employment. Teresa was always blessed with many friends due to her friendly personality and compassion com-passion that she showed for others. She was a licensed nurse's aide and enjoyed caring for others. Teresa loved to read books. She would read anything that had print on it. She liked doing crossword puzzles. In her younger years she would show her cats competitively at state Jimena Hunting Graveside services for Jimena Henrietta (Jimmie) Hunting, 76, were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at 1 p.m in the Alcova Wyoming Cemetery. A visitation was held at the Thompson Blackburn Mortuary Monday, Nov. 6. Teresa is survived by her husband, Dean Southam; sister Valarie, brother Rory (Susan) Tanner; two nephews, Brandon and Devan Tanner; and her parents. She is preceded in death by two children, Terry Lynn and Gary Lee, who tragically drowned in 1988, and by a brother Gary Tanner. Out of that union were born four children. She later met and married Robert Lile Hunting and moved to Vernal where they have lived for 33 years. She passed away on Nov. 2 in Vernal. She worked hard all of her life and set an example of productivity pro-ductivity and a strong work ethic for her family, working as a waitress most of her young family life and a homemaker after moving to Vernal. She enjoyed canning, sewing and 7 jlL II ' E. L. "Jack" Kier E. L "Jack" Kier E.L. "Jack" Kier, 83, passed away at his home in Vernal on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006. He was born on Nov. 18, 1922 in Courtland, Kan. to Nettie Rosamond Pilcher Kier and Russell Dudley Kier. Russ and Rosie had three sons: Jack, Ken, and Dick. Jack graduated from Kremmling High School in Kremmling, Colo, in 1941. Soon after he was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force and served in Europe until 1946. He had a very distinguished career which included many decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and his most prized possession, posses-sion, a letter of commendation commenda-tion from President Harry Truman. He flew 50 missions over Germany as a fighter pilot making 7 kills. He then rose to the rank of Major and served as the commanding officer for all of Southern Germany. He later obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was most proud of his service to his country. After serving his country he returned to Artesia, Colo, to go into the furniture business with Donald Larsen Donald Larsen, age 95, died at his home on Tuesday night, Nov. 7, 2006. The son of Joseph Edward and Mary Ellen Larsen, he was born on March 15, 1911 in Lyman, Wyo. Following graduation from Lyman High School in 1929, he went to work at the CCC camps at Sheep Creek in Daggett County, Utah. There he met his future wife Esther Boren. They were married on April 2, 1938 in Manila, Utah by Bishop Cliff A. Christensen. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on Jan. 21, 1948. They moved to Urie, Wyo. where he ranched for Ross Reed, then continuing on to Winton, Wyo., where he worked in the coal mines during World War II. In 1945, they moved to Manila, Utah where he worked for Marion Campbell. He purchased a small farm in Sweetwater County, Wyo. There he built a home for his family on Henry's Fork. He was Bishop to the Manila Ward for 13 years and worked as custodian for the Manila Irma Hardy Irma Alice Karren Hardy, age 101, of Roosevelt, died Nov. 9, 2006 at the Uintah Basin Medical Center from a heart failure. Irma was born Dec. 27, 1904 in Vernal to John Daniel and Alice Hanna Cox Karren. She married Paul Davis Hardy, he died May 5, 1974. Irma had a great talent when it came to cooking and making afghans. She sold afghans all over the United States through the years. She enjoyed gardening garden-ing and doing yard work. She loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. Irma was very grateful that she was able to keep her mind until the very end. She is survived by a son, Byron Hardy, Roosevelt; daughter daugh-ter Raema (Ray) Hardy, San crocheting and crafted many heirlooms for family members. She is survived by her husband, hus-band, Lile, and her sister Ellen Raymond of Riverton, Wyo. In addition, she is survived by two sons and their spouses, Randy (Linda) Archer and Marvin (April) Archer of Riverton, Wyo.; and daughters Glenda (Dave) Pullen of Casper, Wyo. and Cheri (Torr) McCurdy of Vernal; stepchildren Bob (Janice) Hunting and Lila (Keith) Redding of Vernal; and a multitude of loving grandchildren grandchil-dren and great-grandchildren. Included among those businesses were Utah Colorado Gas Co., Tomahawk Trucking, LP Gas and Keir Co. During the 30 years Jack was a businessman busi-nessman in Vernal, he and his father Russ, formed Western Petroleum after Jack was able to obtain, through considerable effort, the authority to represent repre-sent Chevron Oil in the Basin. He loved to work with wood and even more he loved the mountains, gathering fire wood, entertaining friends and business associates at his cabin. He loved his family. Jack is survived by 2 sons, Raymond and Russell; and 2 daughters, Sharron Glines, and Shawn (Jay) Wolfe; and 6 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. She was important to and loved by many people and will be greatly missed as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
