The pre- saur Quarry Visitor Center are currently working on an environmental envi-ronmental impact statement (EIS), following the closing of the facility earlier this summer. The final document incorporates incorpo-rates public opinion and is used by National Park Service (NPS) regional directors to make decisions. deci-sions. ' ; According to Mary Risser, superintendant at Dinosaur National Na-tional Monument, the statement ferred option would protect the fossil wall and still allow visitor access, but would move other exhibits and facilities off the hill to a more stable area. .At a public hearing last Wednesday, Commissioner Mike McKee said he wanted to make sure people were getting the message that even though the visitor center is closed, there are still fossils to see at the quarry. Risser assured McK- to advertise and that the quarry is one of the top concerns in the intermountain region for NPS. The fossils protected by the Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center were first discovered in 1909 by Earl Douglas. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson designated 80 acres of the site as Dinosaur National Monument. The visitor visi-tor center was built in the 1950s around a wall of rock containing contain-ing the some of the best examples exam-ples of Jurassic period fossils in the world. .' Since the quarry was closed earlier this summer, a temporary tempo-rary visitor center has continued contin-ued to serve patrons, and visitors visi-tors can see other fossil bones from the Cretaceous period embedded em-bedded in rock a short distance from the center. These fossils are the best examples from this particular period and are currently under excavation by students from Brigham Young University.
