Show hA Wednesday, October 25, 2006 .Vernal Express. Obituaries Paul Newell Christensen Paul Newell Christensen, age 66, died Oct 20, 2006 at his homeinTalmage. He was born Feb. 25, 1940 in Roosevelt to Newell Paul and Leah Lindsay Christensen. He married Maxine Lorraine Timothy July 27, 1973 in Reno, Nev. The most unique of the unique. Few ever gain as much from life as Newell did. He is a precious treasure to the family fam-ily he so dearly loved. His family fam-ily thanks him for the special memories he helped to create and the traditions he began. His love for horses and understanding under-standing of them was unparalleled unparal-leled by any. Rarely was he not upon the back of a long-legged pony. He wanted them to have speed, whether beneath him or out in front. For his talented horsemanship horseman-ship as a pickup man and many other contributions, he was chosen as Altamont's 2001 Legendary Cowboy for their Longhorn Days celebration. Newell's horsemanship . also helped with the various types of livestock he either raised, or lent a hand in raising. His friends will remember him for the ready hand to help and advice to share. His understanding under-standing of horses made him a dangerously shrewd horse-trader. horse-trader. Newell could have sold a snowball to a glacier. Truly, he loved matching men and women with the animals he loved. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, becoming very skilled at each during his life. The combination of this and his knowledge of the Uintas brought many rewarding trips to him and those who took his humble advice. His knowledge knowl-edge came from his love for the mountains and the time he spent as the first Wilderness Ranger for the Uintas. Many trails used by outdoorsmen today were cleared by Newell. All who knew him have felt a great loss. In common agreement, agree-ment, we say, "This empty cot lAIKd Ktail Storti CacarCiof 603 S. Main St. Su. 3 (435)865-0101 192 N. 200 E. (435)627-9053 life is still near the start." A song faintly begins to play. My ear strains to listen. Strange, thinks me, "Strawberry Roan," is not a hymn. Then he is there. My heart shouts, I long to cheer. The horse he is on, regal as only one has ever been. "Hardluck," it is and I know the man then. I'm amazed that there are still lines on his face. As only he can, he shoots me a smile, "It's for the girls, just in case." His face becomes sober and says he to me. "Take a good look at what you see." I know in an instant what I was intended to view. It was more than shiny boot or the new shirt. Although, they were nice too. Beyond the saddle and the rope braided gold. Not even the hat that sat on his head so bold. Proud beyond any king the world has ever known. It was in the way he sat atop his leather throne. It was the way his clothes looked on him. The way the horse looked beneath him. With him, cowboy was not just a game or a neat word to say. With him, it was the only way. On earth or in heaven, he would remain just what he always had been, a cowboy. He turned from me now, kicking his horse to a lope. And chased up the hill, towards some horses, already swinging his rope. Like all good westerns, the sun began to set as he rides out of sight. A voice speaks to me, I know it belongs to him. With the same distinctly quiet voice, says he, "Tell all of them. This is how I want 'em to remember me." Tearfully, I nod as my grandpa grand-pa chases horses to heaven. "So long." I call to the last , true American Cowboy." "'" By Casey Lee Christensen. . : Equipment & promotional offers at these locations may vary.
