Show f tag Recycling? In Vernal? By Jennifer Petty Express Writer According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American produces approximately approxi-mately 4.5 pounds of waste per day. That means that every year, each man woman and child tosses out an average of nearly 1,650 pounds of diapers, apple cores, cereal boxes, junk mail, yard trimmings, old magazines, or whatever else goes into their trash can. Less than one-quarter of garbage is recycled, leaving the rest for landfills and incinerators. incin-erators. The collective amount of all this garbage would equal an equivalent weight of water that could fill more than 68,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. Recycling levels nationwide have increased, but there is still a lot of work to do. Vernal resident, resi-dent, Nelle Heeney, believes Vernal is not doing as well as the rest of the nation. "Recycling in Vernal seems to have just gone downhill," said Heeney. "You don't see people reusing their plastic or paper grocery sacks, or using cloth bags when they buy groceries. A lot of people don't even know that there are places to take recyclables. I think we will be in a big bind if people don't start doing it again." Heeney explained that a few years ago, the checkers at grocery gro-cery stores would comment that it was good that she brought back her paper grocery sacks to reuse. Now, she said, the checkers check-ers wonder what she is doing when she asks to use her own bags at the store. Josh Graham is in charge of the "Can Do Crew," a recycling program organized through the school district and run by 18- to 22-year-olds with disabilities. When asked about the concern local residents and businesses had with recycling, Graham said, "If you ask people if they think recycling is a good thing, they will almost always say, 'Yes,' but the majority of people probably don't ever give actu- Thrifty Shopper Wednesday, June H 2006 9 Paper and aluminum can be dropped off at bins like these located at Walmart, Davis Jubilee, or the Can Do Crew sorting station located on Highway 40 at about 1291 East Cardboard should be dropped off at the sorting station only. ally doing it a second thought." In other words, he said, "There is a fair amount of interest, but a low level of concern." The reason recycling levels in Vernal are relatively low, hypothesized Graham is that See Recycle on C6 EAGLE OIL FIELD SERVICES P.O.
