Show D4 WtfeHday, April 13, 2005 .Vernal Express, Chivers selected for Dixie State College cheerleading squad 77 Western Petroleum says farewell to two retirees Jessie Chivers, former three year Uintah Ute cheerleader and vanity captain recently traveled to St George to compete com-pete for a spot on the Dixie State College Cheerleader Squad. She was selected as a new member in the tryouts held April 8 and 9 in the Burns Arena. Thirty young ladies from Utah and California schools, with five returning Dixie State College cheerleaders cheerlead-ers were competing for the 24 member squad, consisting of 12 ladies and 12 men. The competition included includ-ed performing a cheer and dance taught by the DSC Cheerleaders, a tumbling pass, splits, a required partner stunt and an optional partner stunt. An application, two recommendation recom-mendation letters and high school transcripts were also required. Three outside judges judg-es and DSC Cheer Coaches, Donelle and Ryan Forbes, who took the squad to a third place finish this spring at a USA national competition held in Las Vegas, judged the competitors. competi-tors. They also stated how they looked forward to 2006 competition compe-tition with the level of talent presented in this year's newly chosen squad. Kg? 7 i h Jessie Chivers The squad will start their season in July to prepare for the 60 events they will be cheering at and participating in throughout the year. All that Jessie learned as a UHS Cheerleader helped her succeed suc-ceed in the tough competition. She thanks all those who have coached, supported and helped her in the sport she loves so much. Jessie is the daughter of Foston and Shellie Chivers and the granddaughter of Bill and Marcie Critton, Don and Sally Clements and the late Gilmer A. Chivers. 17 Jessie Chivers participating in stunt competition. Kenneth C. Kay, son of Alvin and Virginia Kay, was born and grew up in Vernal. After graduating gradu-ating from CNCC in Rangely, Colo., in 1964, he and his wife Marty stayed in Vernal where he worked for a service station. In 1967 he and his family, which now included two children, chil-dren, moved to Greeley, Colo., where he worked for a water well drilling company. They returned to Vernal in Jan. of 1970 where Ken was employed with Hiland Dairy Monday, Wednesday and Friday and worked for Western Petroleum, Inc. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. In 1972 Ken and his brother Butch and Keith Caldwell purchased partnerships part-nerships in the company from owner Alvin Kay and eventually eventu-ally bought the entire business. When Western Petroleum purchased the Chevron jobber in Roosevelt in 1979, Ken was tapped to run that operation. They built the Ballard terminal in 1980. Ken has been commuting commut-ing to the West side since then. Carolyn Ellison Walker was born in American Fork. She graduated from American Fork High School and then went to LDS Business College for one year. Her career started out as a secretary at Utah State Training School where she worked during dur-ing her high school years. She married Merlin R. Walker in August of 1957 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Carolyn worked for Utah State University as a secretary for the buildings and grounds department while Merlin attended college there for one year. For the next eight years they traveled and lived in various western states while Merlin worked for the Bureau of Public Roads. Carolyn started with Chevron Oil at Red Wash Oil field in Feb. 1965. She worked there for six and a half years until they transferred all of the office personnel to Denver. Instead of moving to Denver she chose to stay in Vernal. Six months later she became employed with Western Petroleum Inc. at the persistence persis-tence of Keith Caldwell. For the next 34 years Carolyn was an invaluable employee taking on the responsibilities of dispatching dis-patching through the radio system, sys-tem, invoicing, payroll, profit and loss statements, accounts receivable and accounts payable, pay-able, just to name a few. Bravo subsequently thanked the Vernal Lodge for inviting and hosting him and Regina and presented new President Dyle and his wife Carol with gifts. He also presented a gift to retiring Exalted Ruler J.J. Kerlin. Kerlin thanked everyone for helping him these past three years and noted that his major goal of initiating new members had been successful but that more needed to be recruited. He then wished the new slate the best of luck and success.
