Cliff Perry earns Dinosaurland Yard honors By Maureen Spencer Express Writer He says he hides his vegetables behind the garage, but if Cliff Perry lavishes as much attention on the veggies as he does his home's landscaping, land-scaping, they're sure to be prize winners, too. Perry has been presented with the Dinosaurland in Bloom Spotlight Yard award by this week's judges, Dan and Clara Price. Perry gave contest and civic leaders lead-ers a tour of his yards last Thursday. He is modest about his and his late wife Elaine's over 40 years of developing the home's exterior. His two to three hours of yard work each day have produced an elegant display of a wide assortment assort-ment of annuals and perennials, along with trees and shaped juniper and yew that show the attention of decades of growth. Several brilliant displays of color are featured in a variety of islands in his two-layered front yard. Among the plantings are grasses, double petunias, snapdragons, liatris, dahlias, dahl-ias, nasturtiums, roses and an established estab-lished butterfly bush. Purples, golds and reds are woven among the many colors as his house-level yards surround the home with even more interesting beds of flowers in the backyard. A firm believer in compost, he says he just bought another 10 bags last week. Perry, original owner of Vernal's PontiacCadillacBuick and GMC dealership, has tucked interesting decorations throughout his yards. When an authentic bear paw print from Glacier National Park caught his attention, he cast several models which he tucked creatively throughout through-out his flower beds. The claws on the very large print are as long as an adult's fingers. "There was nothing here except lilacs," he says of the yards when he and Elaine purchased the home. In the side yard, ferns and large-leafed hostas enjoy the shade of fencing and well-kept trees. A dazzling clump of daylillies produced 50 blooms the previous week. A firm believer in recycling bulbs, he uses a root cellar shed to winter over all of his bulbs. For his floral display efforts. Perry received a large turtle planter from Bloom Master and plants to fill it from Basin Nursery. The traveling Spotlight Yard sign will remain at the Perry home at 248 East 200 North until next Thursday, when it will be presented his successor. A... ' ' 7 A, Ax J J UHS Class of 1944.
