UHS Quilters display at Salt Lake Quilt Show Six of the best Uintah High School machine quilters were selected to attend and display their quilts at the recent Home Machine Quilt Show at the South Towne Expo Center in Salt Lake City. The six, selected from a drawing draw-ing of the 12 best quilt students of UHS teacher Renee Steele, made the special reward trip and found themselves being treated as special guests of honor at the popular show. "All of the girls' quilts were done freehand or with a walking foot." says Steele, "and the adult quilters there were amaed at their age and techniques. The adults have the mindset that they have to use fancy quilt machines, and our students create beautiful work done with strength, determination and imagi nation. Each quilt shows elaborately detailed freehand patterning in addition addi-tion to more traditional color separation sepa-ration quilting. Senior Marci Goodrich has taken four years of machine quilting with Steele's program, turning out 1 1 quilts. After attending the Show she discovered that she has a lot of techniques that have yet to be learned. Goodrich was given a special spe-cial "Teacher's Choice Award" red ribbon for her Show quilt. Ashley Goodwin, Lizzie Bailey, Alicia Thomas, Alisha Merkley and Brynna Henderson attended with their quilts. The five students represent repre-sent a combined lifetime production of over 30 quilts. A quilt by Ramcy Piva was also taken to be shown. Lizzie Bailey has worked for one year in the program, and took her second quilt for show. Ashley Goodwin began quilting with the UHS program two years ago and says she has "lost count" of all of the quilts that she has made for herself her-self and family. Brynna Henderson has also studied stud-ied for four years with the Steele program and made many quilts. "They treated us very well," Renee says, noting that admission fees were waived. Show producers exhibited the Uintah High Quilts and two classes were set up especially espe-cially for the UHS delegation. In all, over 300 quilts were accepted accept-ed for display at this year's Home Machine Quilt Show. o 3rd Annual Vernal Fire Department Free Pancake Breakfast O Saturday, May 15,2004 O 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. O Vernal Fire Station, 495 E.
