Show weanesaay, May a, i;u(J4 3 UHS Native Heritage Club begins tradition 7: 7 7T Vernal Express A stately aspen tree was given to the Vernal Walking Park Arbor Day as the beginning of a heritage of an inter-community celebration of spring. The tree received special treatment treat-ment from the Uintah High School Heritage Club, an organization for Native American students, governmental gov-ernmental leaders, Ute Tribe leaders lead-ers and the Vernal Tree Board at ceremonies conducted at the park Friday, April 30. Uintah County Commissioners Glen McKee, Jim Abplanalp and Dave Haslem joined in the program, pro-gram, with comissioner Haslem commending the high school group for providing such a fine symbol of unity for the community to enjoy. Mavor Bill Kremmin and Vernal City Manager Ken Bassett also joined the community leaders. Tree Board Chairman Ed Zuburchen recognized that the tree was donated for a heritage to continue contin-ue between the Ute Tribe and non-Indian non-Indian residents. He recognized the event as the first such annual Arbor Day Heritage recognition. Representing Uintah High School were Miss Indian Uintah High School 2003-04 Noreen Johnson, first attendant Laura Duncan and second attendant Tiffany Taveapont. Queen Noreen was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Clifford Duncan, representing the Ute Tribe, spoke of earlier times when tribal members would travel to Vernal, "many in wagons," in order to attend the Vernal Rodeo. He noted that the families would camp along the gentle slopes which today are part of the Walking Park. Following his comments, Duncan blessed the tree and the ground in which it would grow, to represent friendship and unity between the two communities. Members of the Heritage Club helped Zuburchen place and set the large tree. Thirteen Native American students stu-dents from Uintah High also attended attend-ed the ceremonies, and joined other guests in a round dance with the drumming and singing of the Red Spirit Singers. Members of Red Spirit Singers were Raphael Kanip, Orlando Copperfield and Elijah John. nan O C7 AUTO GLASS Your Choice for Auto Class Repair & Replacement Monday -Friday 7:30-5:30 Coupon Expires 12-31-04 Present this coupon at the Nationwide Auto Glass in Vernal and receive a $25.00 gift certificate to Wal-Mart 0ffer applies to windshields that have been submitted for an insurance claim.
