Show Vernal Express Wednesday, March 1 7, 2004 Q7 Northeastern region fishing report NORTHEASTERN REGION -Ice fishing report updated March 11,2004 Note: Warmer weather has turned snow into slush and on some of the lower and mid- elevation eleva-tion reservoirs there is ice along the edges. Check ice conditions carefully! BIG SAND WASH RESERVOIR RESER-VOIR Reports of fair to good fishing. Check ice carefully before venturing out. The reservoir is being filled so edges will have newer ice. BULLOCKCOTTONWOOD RESERVOIRS No new reports. Other reservoirs in area are showing show-ing open water around edges. BROUGH RESERVOIR No new reports. Other reservoirs in area have open water rimming the edges. Check ice carefully before venturing out, as edges will have newer ice. To get to Brough, take State Route 88 south from U.S. Route 40 (Ouray Road). Turn west at the second dirt road past the high power lines. Follow this road approximately 2 miles, staying to the left at each main fork. Road is quite rutted. BROWNIE SPIRIT LAKE Last report was fair to good fishing. fish-ing. Last reports were of fair to good fishing on Calder but biologists fear that if it winterkills, it will be about now. Crouse is dry. All other regulations remain in effect including the four fish limit on Matt Warner. ':(, '? u CURRANT CREEK RESERVOIR RESER-VOIR Reports of good fishing. Check ice carefully before venturing ventur-ing out. Area has received new snow. The road to the dam is maintained frequently during the winter but may be closed on any given day. FLAMING GORGE RESERVOIR RESER-VOIR All ramps are frozen although some open water exists near the dam. There is a foot or more of ice on the Wyoming portion por-tion of the reservoir, Linwood Bay, Antelope Flats, Stateline and Sheep Creek. Check ice conditions condi-tions carefully. Lake trout fishing has been good to excellent for small fish in the Buckboard and Big Bend areas, especially over the river channel, and very good at Sheep Creek. Anglers report spotty spot-ty fishing but some large fish caught at Stateline, Linwood, Antelope and Anvil Draw. Try marabou or tube jigs tipped with a minnow, shrimp or sucker meat along structure 50-100 feet deep. There are many small- and medium-sized lake trout in Flaming Gorge, so please take advantage of the new six-fish lake trout regulation regula-tion (only one fish over 28 inches) and harvest a limit. Rainbow trout fishing is good to excellent in 10-20 10-20 feet of water near shoreline areas using small spoons and ice jigs. Good areas include Squaw Hollow, Current Creek, Anvil Draw, Sheep Creek, Linwood, Antelope and South Buckboard. Brown trout also are being taken in the northern portions of the reservoir. reser-voir. GREEN RIVER (upper) Base flows are averaging 860 cubic feet per second. Due to experimental flows at Glen Canyon Dam, for the remainder of March, Green River flows may increase daily to 2,000 cfs for a maximum of four hours. Snow pack in the upper Green River drainage is currently only 88 percent of normal. Fish are in a winter pattern primarily concentrated concen-trated in pools, slow runs, and eddies. Dry fly fishing has been picking up, with midge and occasional occa-sional Blue Winged Olive hatches reported, particularly mid afternoon after-noon on warmer days. Try various attractor patterns and small Blue Winged Olive and midge imitations. imita-tions. Nymph fishing is still the dominant technique using egg patterns; pat-terns; San Juan worms, size 12-14; bead head midge, size 16-22; and RS-II, WD-40, or pheasant tails, size 16-20. Olive, orange, tan or pink scuds, size 10-14, are another effective year-round pattern. For streamer fishing, try brown, tan or olive wooly buggers, size 2-6, and light colored minnow imitations. Spin fishermen should try small rapalas; spinners; black, brown or olive marabou jigs; and tube jigs. New Zealand mudsnail densities have dramatically increased in several sev-eral localized areas near and downstream down-stream of Little Hole. Please thoroughly thor-oughly clean mud and vegetation from waders, boats and fishing gear, and if possible, completely dry equipment before leaving the area. GREEN RIVER (lower) Mostly ice free with some floating chunks. MATT WARNER RESERVOIR No new reports. Last reports were of fair to good fishing for rainbow trout. Area has received new snow. Access by skis or snowmobile due to wind and snowstorms. Check edge ice carefully before venturing out. MOON LAKE Last reports were of fair to good fishing for rainbow, splake and other trout. Area has received new snow. Check ice edges carefully before venturing out. PELICAN LAKE Angler results have been mixed with some having good to excellent fishing for bass and bluegill while others claim almost nothing. Open water along edges and any ice along the edges will be newer, thickness increases once the angler gets away from the edge. Warm weather making ice fishing questionable. RED FLEET RESERVOIR Anglers reporting good fishing for rainbow trout. Showing some signs of water along edges. Always check ice carefully before venturing out. STARVATION RESERVOIR Anglers report good fishing for walleye of variable sizes and 10-inch 10-inch yellow perch. Showing some signs of water along edges, check the ice carefully before venturing out. STEINAKER RESERVOIR No new reports, water along the edges especially in the shallower northern areas and along the inlet. Check ice carefully before venturing out. UINTA MOUNTAIN LAKES AND STREAMS Ice on the lakes, ponds and along most areas on the streams. Good snow falls during February. Be prepared for any kind of weather. This class begins with a pre-course pre-course screening, which is the introduction to the life guarding class. Participants must pass the skills test that morning to enroll for the rest of the training. All students need to bring $100 for the registration registra-tion fee, a swim suit, towel and goggles.
