Show Vernal Police distributing free firearm safety kits Vernal City Police Department will provide free firearm safety kits to local residents through a partnership part-nership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education educa-tion program. The safety kits are currently available at the front desk of the Vernal City Police Department, 437 East Main. The goal of the program is to prevent children and any other unauthorized unautho-rized people from accessing firearms. Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), will distribute millions of firearm safety kits throughout the country over the next year. The program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, with additional funding provided by the firearms industry. By forming a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the" Vernal City Police Department is participating in a growing national effort to promote pro-mote firearms safety education to all gun owners. Project ChildSafe will distribute gun lock safety kits to all 50 states and the five U.S. territories. "We are pleased to have the Vernal City Police Deparment as a Project ChildSafe partner," said Dee Dee Dockins, spokesperson for the program. "Project ChildSafe is an important step forward for-ward in helping ensure that all firearm owners fully understand their responsibilities with respect to the safe handling and storage of firearms." Community hike to be in Dry Fork The snow up Dry Fork is melting fast, but there's still time to enjoy it. Saturday, at 10 p.m., meet at Basin Sports parking lot to join a walk up the Flume Trail. The group will cross the lower Dry Fork footbridge, possibly witnessing witness-ing the season's first streams of water, and walk up a hard-packed path through the snow. The first mile of the trail is very flat, and will be moderately strenuous. Vernal Man sustains accidental gunshot wound Saturday, BLM Ranger Wayne Steven stopped a vehicle that was traveling north on SR4S which had passed him on a double yellow line. When the ranger spoke with the driver, he was informed that he was in a hurry to get a victim of an accidental gunshot wound to Ashley Valley Medical Center. Stevens assessed the injuries to the victim and then transported him to Ashley Valley Medical Center in his vehicle. Uintah County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Robert Roth met at the Medical Center with Stevens and, the victim, who was identified as Brett Hadlock, 21 of Vernal. Hadlock and a friend were shooting shoot-ing about 4 miles west of SR45 on the Glen Bench Road when the accident occurred. The victim had loaded the magazine tube, chambered cham-bered a round and was in the process of loading one more round into the magazine tube. While Hadlock was closing the magazine tube the weapon was pulled forward for-ward across the seat touching off the trigger. Hadlock sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand. The round entered in the palm and traveled through his hand exiting around the knuckle of his left index finger. The victim was assessed at Ashley Valley Medical Center and then released and referred to University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City for surgery and treatment. treat-ment. Vets, Mosquito Abatement urge WNV horse shots soon Steven Romney, director of the Uintah Mosquito Abatement District, has issued an urgent reminder to eastern Utah horse owners regarding the imminent need for vaccinating their animals for protection against . West , .Nile Virus. In the news release made last week, Romney says, "NOW is the time to consult your veterinarian regarding the need for vaccinating your horses and other equines against mosquito-born West Nile Virus. Vaccinations early in the season are necessary in order to allow sufficient time for those animals ani-mals to develop adequate immunity to the virus." Romney continued by stating that local veterinarians agree that the initial vaccination must be followed fol-lowed by a booster shot three to six weeks later. At least 30 more days must then elapse before high levels of immunity can be achieved, and a follow up booster shot every year thereafter is recommended. Training exercise turns into real thing Last Friday evening, Uintah County Search and Rescue members mem-bers were called out on a search for some lost Boy Scouts. Upon the arrival of the volunteer members of Search and Rescue to their staging area, they were instructed that they would be participating par-ticipating in a training exercise to determine their emergency preparedness pre-paredness for over night winter survival. They were given a mock exercise to extract a lost party. Upon deployment of the volunteer volun-teer group, they were contacted at riencing WNV outbreaks. Areas wanted for trash pickup With spring on its way, the Uintah County Sheriff's Department is seeking public input on areas in Uintah County that may be in need of roadside trash pickup. Uintah County Sheriff Rick Hawkins will be assigning inmate work detail to pick up these area again this year. Due to the snow conditions, one of the leaders' snow machines had gotten stuck and other members on skis had missed a turn and were eventually located several miles off Open house scheduled for Trout Slope West Timber Project Ashley National Forest will host an open house for the Trout Slope West Timber Project on March 24 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Interagency Fire Center, located behind the Forest Service Supervisor's office. This open house will provide opportunity for casual conversation regarding the timber project. The location of the Trout Slope ; West timber project is on the Vernal Ranger District between Oaks Park and Long Park Reservoirs.
