Saint ck: the man behind the holiday Every year on March 17, we search our closets for something green to wear so no one will pinch us on Saint Patrick's Day, but why? Who was Saint Patrick, and why do we celebrate a day in his honor? Most people know Saint Patrick as the patron saint of Ireland, but they don't know much else about him or how he came to be the patron saint of Ireland. Born as Maewyn Succat near the end of the fourth century, he began his life as a pagan in Britain, not Ireland. When he was 16 years old, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. As a slave, he turned to God and Christianity for solace. Six years later, he escaped to the northern coast of Gaul. In Gaul, Maewyn began studying in the monastery under Saint Germain, the bishop of Auxerre. Maewyn changed his name to Patrick and continued his studies at the monastery for 12 years. During that time, Patrick came to believe that it was his calling to convert the pagans of Ireland to Christianity. Patrick wasn't the first Christian missionary in Ireland, but he is credited with ridding Ireland of paganism and converting the country coun-try to Christianity. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries, schools and churches. He was arrested several times, but always managed to escape and continue con-tinue his work. Patrick's mission in Ireland lasted 30 years. During that time, he supposedly sup-posedly drove all the snakes out of Ireland, forcing them into the sea where they drowned. However, because the snake is often used as a pagan symbol, many people believe the tale merely represents the disappearance disap-pearance of paganism from Ireland. Patrick died on March 17 in A.D. 461. That day has been designated as Saint Patrick's Day ever since. The holiday was first celebrated in America in 1737 in Boston, Mass., before the United States declared its independence from Britain. Today, Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated cele-brated with shamrocks and the color green, which can be traced back to Saint Patrick. While he was teaching teach-ing Irish people about Christianity, Patrick used a shamrock, which looks like a three-leafed clover, to explain the Christian concept of the Trinitythe Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. People began to wear shamrocks on Saint Patrick's Day to honor the missionary. Green became the traditional color of Saint Patrick's Day because it is the color of the shamrock, the color of spring and it represents hope and nature. For those of us who get pinched when we forget to wear green, we have school children chil-dren to blame for that tradition, not Saint Patrick. Inc., the present Beneficiary. USOMATA Silver Tea, silent auction Saturday Music lovers are preparing for a feast of the senses Saturday, March 20, when the Uintah School of Music and the Arts (USOMATA) presents its annual Silver Tea with the added attraction of the first annual Silent Auction. Saturday's Silver Tea music will begin at I p.m. and performances will continue throughout the afternoon after-noon until 5 p.m. Suggested admission admis-sion donation is $5 per person and $10 per family. The talented stringed musicians will present their performances in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, while the concurrent Silver Tea and Silent Auction will be held in the adjacent graciously remodeled Parish I louse, 226 West Main. The afternoon of music will be presented in three sections from 1-2:15 1-2:15 p.m., 2:25-3:40 p.m. and 3:50-5 p.m., and Silent Auction offerings will be divided into three sections, also. The Tea, a tradition since 1979 to raise funds for youth orchestras, had an early history of being performed per-formed in homes. An earlier Tea series had been held to raise funds to sponsor the Utah Symphony. Acoustical quality was enhanced when the Teas were resumed in 2000 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Parish House. The building was constructed by the same craftsmen who built the Uintah Tabernacle. Traditional Silver Tea menu will continue this year with fancy cook ies, ribbon sandwiches, crab puffs, fresh strawberries, tasty punch and fresh tea. The addition of an attractive array of items for the first Silent Auction will give Tea patrons a wide variety of quality items from which to choose. Among the wide variety of items are paintings from Linda Shimmin and Petra Jones, quality food items, movie gift baskets, bas-kets, soap gift baskets, fishing supply sup-ply package and items from Summerhays Music. Many Silent Auction items were given by the former Goosebumps to St. Paul's Parish and are being donated to raise USOMATA funds. Tea patrons will have their final opportunity to order the special nationally known Cummings Studio Chocolate Easter eggs, made fresh following ordering. The Cummings company has donated five one-pound chocolate gift certificates cer-tificates for the Silent Auction. Eggs will be ready for delivery April 3. Vernal native named Utah HotelLodging executive The Utah Hotel and Lodging Association Board of Directors has announced the selection of Teri Harrison Burns as the new executive execu-tive director of UH&LA. Burns, a native of Vernal, attended attend-ed Weber State College and resides in Ogden. She has 25 years experience experi-ence in the lodging industry, serving serv-ing in many capacities for a variety of properties and franchises within the western United States. A 1972 graduate of Uintah High School, Burns began her hotel career in human resources at the Vernal Sheraton Inn. and still has many close associations in the area. Bums was active in rodeo while living in Vernal. Her step-daughter. Rebecca Hislop, still lives in Vernal. The hotel executive says her heart's desire is to ultimately move back to Vernal and invest in the area. The daughter of Phil and Lou Harrison of Vernal. Bums says eastern east-ern Utah will always be a special place for her. " The Uintah Basin area is so diverse that a traveler can enjoy a broad spectrum of outdoor activities activi-ties within a 20-minute drive from town." she says. Burns has played a large part in the Utah Hotel and Lodging Association, having been an active member for over eight years serving serv-ing on the board of directors and the executive committee. She has chaired the Utah "Stars of the Industry Committee" and served on the scholarshipeducation committee for the Association. She received the Utah Stale Stars of the Industry "Lodging Manager of the Year" award in 2001. In addition to her industry driven work. Burns has also served on the military affairs committee.
