Show Fall 2000 Discover Dinosaurtand 1 1 Settlement and advancement of Uintah After the signing of the Declaration of Independence, two Spanish priests and a group of eight explorers, set out to find a shorter route to the mission at Monterey. Calif., from Santa Fe, N. M. Fathers Francisco Antanasio Domingue and Silverstre De Escalantc and their eight companions were the first white men in Utah. A State Historical Marker east of Jensen on Highway 40. gives an account of their journey to the ' Uintah Region. Misdirected by Indian guides, they traveled northerly along the general course of the Delores River through Western Colorado, and on Sept. 1 4, 1776, found themselves them-selves in this basin. They returned to Santa Fe in January of 1977. As they were traveling back to Santa Fe, they mapped the rivers and valleys of the Uintah Region. This detailed map and description was used by fur trappers and traders for many years. John Wesley Powell, a geologist geolo-gist and naturalist, came west to map the Green, Grand, and Colorado rivers. He also wanted to study the animals and the plant , life along the river, and he wanted want-ed to determine the age of the 4 Earty visitors to the Uintah Basin rocks that formed the canyons along the river. Powell and his company of men were the first white men to travel all .the way down the Green River to the Colorado River. He also named Flaming Gorge, Lodore Canyon and Red Canyon. William H. Ashiey, a politician faced rugged terrain. and businessman, came to the Uintah Region in 1825. He did not stay long, but left his name on the creek, forest and valley. In August 1861. the president of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young, called a company of men to explore the Uintah Region. On Oct 3, 1961, President Abraham Lincoln declared the Uintah Region as an Indian Reservation, and the white settlers set-tlers built homes and villages in other areas of the state. For the next 14 years, the Uintah Region was left to the Indians. Captain Pardon E. Dodds was Photo fay Jan Sumwy the first Indian agent to work for the Uintah Utes. Settling in first the Tabiona, and then Whiterocks area, Dodds served the Indians until his successor, John J.
