Edwin Goodrich of Tridell attended attend-ed the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) July 17-27 in Washington, D.C. Based on scholastic merit, community involvement and leadership contribution, contri-bution, this program enables high school students to interact with today's national leaders. NYLC scholars work through many issues facing the nation today. "The NYLC inspires exceptional high school students like Goodrich to face the challenges of leadership head-on and to gain confidence in making positive changes in their communities and throughout the world," said Michael Lasday, executive exec-utive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC), the organization that sponsors the NYLC. "It wasn't all about leadership," said Goodrich, "even though it had a lot of leadership and political simulations, sim-ulations, it was about making new friends from different areas around the country." The Honorable Mike Doyle, U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania welcomed the students to the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, an honor usually reserved for members of Congress and their guests. The students filled the chamber inside the U.S. Capitol Building where the State of the Union Address takes place. Doyle told the students to "Get involved in government issues, especially on the local level. Be a part of your communities and make a difference, there! "We were able to visit Capitol Hill on Thursday, July 20. We did a lot of walking, dealt with metal detectors detec-tors and asked for a lot of directions," direc-tions," said Goodrich. "We met Senator Hatch and Bennett, but because they were in a hurry we were only able to shake their hands. I got my picture taken with Bennett and the other three students from Utah." Because leadership goes beyond what happens on Capitol Hill, Goodrich had the opportunity to interact with a panel of renowned journalists at the National Press Club. The students were able to ask questions regarding national and international current events, as well as advice and perspectives on how to start a career in journalism. si w- f 5r.J i : i ' 1 ry. r"""SaC 6 : . . . ... 1 I I ml'.' i , -. - '1 VJ IB 'W Treat Yourself to Fine Dining At: FLAMING GORGE'S MOST SCENIC RESTAURANT OPEN DAILY (435) 889-3759 Hwy 44 Flaming Gorge NRA Partners in Recreation with Ashley National Forest VERNAL THl COOO Lift AT A CKAT HCE CUAHANTttOT mm Home appliances, hardware, lawn & aarden Sale prices good August 3rd through August 5th take the Craftsman Challenge We're so confident this tractor is the best value you can find anywhere that we're ottering a tree challenge to anyone who can find a better advertised deal1 17.5-HP rsr 'V sale 1599" 99 CRAFTSMAN 17.54HP tractor, Save $400 Kohler Pro engine. 42-in.
