Show Baseball fleam digs hole Vernal Express Wednesday, April 14, 1993 21 by Eric Pye Sports Writer The Uintah baseball team received six innings of no-hit ball from starter Rod Allen at home last Wednesday in their Region VII match up with Wasatch. If not for inning number one, Allen and his teammates would have evened their region record at 1-1. "We try to go through a set routine with each pitcher, according to his needs before each game," Head Coach Brent Labrum explained. "We give them a certain number of pitches, types of pitches and velocity veloci-ty to warm up with. Rod just isn't preparing himself properly to begin the games. He has had a history of getting hit in the first inning and then settling into solid performances. perfor-mances. I think he is trying to save his arm for the later innings." Wasatch began the game with five runs in the first inning on their way to a 5-3 victory. The Wasps rocked Allen for two doubles, a home run, two singles and a walk coupled with two Ute errors for their scores. "It's not just Rod," Labrum explained, ex-plained, "it's the whole team. Some of the guys are prepared while others oth-ers seem to have the attitude they can play into a state of sharpness. We have an imbalance of errors and runs allowed in the early stages of a lot of our games. Our kids need to prepare themselves better prior to games." From the first inning on, Allen allowed al-lowed just three baserunners, all walks with no Wasatch runner getting get-ting past second base, but the damage dam-age had been done in the first. The Utes meanwhile, played just the opposite of their Wasatch opponents. oppo-nents. The team managed just two hits in the first four innings, against an average pitcher. In the fifth, D.J. Lewis started a Ute rally with a double, followed by a Gibbons single, Sutton walk, Taylor single and Jamey Smuin single sin-gle which produced 3 runs and it might have been more except Taylor got picked off at third on a good move by the Wasp pitcher. Uintah almost tied it up in the sixth when Levi Smuin and Travis Hawkins reached third and second with one out, but Lewis struck out V - ' : ' ' ' , 1 ' ' f- T- ynpw,,, j''' ", j, .4 ' s is- "7 ., t V- ,- , .,.,11 "I ' 'vw ; . The loss dropped Uintah to 0-2 in Region play which puts the team behind the eight ball as far as qualifying quali-fying for state goes. 'We didn't want to get into this situation this year," Labrum stated. "We faced the same challenge last year. It just puts a lot of pressure on the team early and makes every game that much more important." The team hosted Rangely Friday in a wild double header, with the Utes taking the first game 10-4 but dropping the second 12-11. Greg Olsen picked up the victory in game number one, pitching a three hitter through five innings before surrendering surren-dering to relief man Jed Labrum in the sixth. The Utes did all their damage in the first three innings scoring 3, 3, and 4 runs. Rhett Taylor collected two doubles in the game while Tim Gibbons and D.J. Lewis had a pair of singles each. Uintah started Travis Bowden on the mound in the second game. Bowden put Rangely down in order for the first two innings, but in the third, the Colorado team jolted YmMi'::' '."V -71 ANYONE ABLE to identify this man will be given a just reward. Rumors abound, although some claim he is the infamous R. DeCol! AKA Assistant baseball coach. Bowden for 5 runs on five consecutive consecu-tive walks and a single. Jake Allen came in to relieve Bowden surrendering surren-dering 2 more hits and a run before recording the last out. Uintah scored twice in the 4th after af-ter Tim Gibbons drove in Allen and Smuin with a single to left to trail 4-2. 4-2. Rangely came back with three in the fifth on three singles and a walk, but it would have been worse if not for a picture perfect relay from Lewis to cut-off man Levi Smuin to catcher Jamey Smuin at home to gun down a Rangely runner for the 3rd out. Uintah responded with two of their own in the fifth as Hawkins recorded two RBI's with a solid single sin-gle to left, driving in Sutton and Smuin who had walked. Rangely came back with 4 runs in the sixth, chasing Allan with 2 doubles, dou-bles, 3 singles and 2 walks. Jed Labrum replaced Allan to record the final two outs. Uintah answered with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth as Gibbons reached base on an error, er-ror, Stringham singled, Sutton reached on an error and Taylor singled. sin-gled. After Jamey Smuin and pinch hitter Olsen flied out, Levi Smuin singled scoring Taylor. Hawkins and Lewis walked to load the bases, but Gibbons hit into a fielders choice ending the inning. The Utes trailed 12-8 after six. After Labrum retired the side in the seventh, Uintah scored 3 runs in the bottom half and had the tying run on third base with one out, but could not get him across and fell 12-11. "Probably the biggest benefit and most positive aspect of the last three games is that we are finally beginning begin-ning to get some time in on real grass outdoors," Labrum said. The team stood at 5-6 on the season going go-ing into yesterdays game with Basin rival Union. Just when the team needed a shot in the arm the most, they got it in the form of a 10-4 victory over the Cougars. With Rod Allen on the mound with a healthy warm-up before the game, Uintah never trailed. The Utes took a 2-1 lead after the 1st inning and carried a 3-2 lead into in-to the 6th when they scored 7 runs. Blake Sutton singled in 2 runs, Levi Smuin doubled in 2 more and D.J. Lewis doubled in three to put the game away. "We played solid defense and kept our heads in the game from beginning begin-ning to end," Coach Labrum said.
