Show ii 12 Vernal Express Wednesday, April 14, 1993 1 e ai Record tourist season projected for Jarvie I -A ' t sWu $ 'JARVIE HISTORICAL Site at Brown's Park is now open to visitors. Game control board sets new rules - Citing declining deer populations due to drought and winter losses statewide, the Utah Board of Big Game Control April 3 set a seven-day seven-day general season rifle hunt statewide, cutting four days off the traditional eleven-day, buck-only deer hunt. ; Season dates for the deer hunts are as follows: general season rifle deer, Oct. 23-29; archery Aug. 21-Sept. 17 and muzzlcloadcr Nov. 6-15. Elk season dates are: rifle, Oct. 6-19; 6-19; archery, Sept. 2-17; and muzzlcloadcr muz-zlcloadcr Sept. 18-26. There will be an extended archery deer hunt in Salt Lake, Davis and most of Weber County Aug. 21-Dec. 21-Dec. 12. Hunting will be allowed with archery tackle only for both deer and elk in Salt Lake County from 1-80 south the Utah County line. The Board established a bonus point system and new waiting periods peri-ods to apply for some big game species, and wiped the old slate clean so all applicants start on an "even playing field." That means all big game hunters may apply for any hunt in 1993, even if they had a permit per-mit last year. Under the new point system, one bonus point will be awarded for each year an applicant is unsuccessful in the big game drawing. The new waiting periods will be two years for antlerless elk and limited lim-ited buck deer permits, and five years for buck antelope, bull elk and antlerless moose. Pointing out the inconvenience to Utah hunters, the Board eliminated the resident big game license sales cutoffs, implementing instead a 24-hour 24-hour waiting period before hunting for anyone buying a big game or combination license during the hunts. The application period for all special spe-cial permits, such as limited entry buck and restricted area elk, will be May 5 through 25. First choice on antlerless deer permits will go the deer hunters who choose to hunt exclusively ex-clusively for a doc. Board member Jerry Mason, the sportsmen's representative, repre-sentative, said this will be a good option for first-time hunters of those primarily interested in venison for the table. Hunters may purchase one or two antlerless deer tags during a by-mail-only application period from June 7-July 3. Archery and muzzleloader hunters may purchase remaining anterless tags from July 6 until they are sold out. Any hunter who has not purchased pur-chased a deer tag may do so beginning begin-ning July 26. Any tags remaining on August 9 will be sold over-the-counter in the Salt Lake office of the Division of the Wildlife Resources. The 1993-94 big game, hunting proclamation, with complete rules and season dates, and big game permit per-mit application forms will be available avail-able at all DWR offices and most sporting goods stores on May 1. The tourist season at the John Jarvie Historical Site of Browns Park in northeastern Utah is open for the season. According to Brian Bellew, Recreation Planner and Site Supervisor, 'This spring's early visitor vis-itor numbers suggest another record tourist season. But that should come as no surprise when one considers that the number of site visitors has increased every year since BLM acquired ac-quired the property several years ago." The John Jarvie Historical Site was settled by entrepreneur John Jarvie in 1880. It is now an interpretive interpre-tive site managed by BLM. Jarvie and his wife "Pretty Nellie" lived in a two-room dugout their first Browns Park winter. The dugout has been rebuilt using much of the original orig-inal umbers and logs. Several other original structures, now over 100 years old, exist on site. During the late 1800's and early 1900's, the Jarvie Place was the most popular location in Browns Park. Mr. Jarvie operated a general store which stocked everything from saddles to canned goods and from whiskey to candy. Besides being be-ing the only store within a 70-mile radius, the site featured a post office and a river ferry. Mr. Jarvie was an amiable, intelligent and well-read person and Browns Park residents often relied on him to update them on current affairs. The Jarvie Place and other Browns Park locations were often frequented by outlaw gangs including includ-ing the "Wild Bunch" which included includ-ed "Butch Cassidy" and the "Sundance Kid." Browns Park residents resi-dents had a "Live and Let Live" attitude at-titude and gang members often labored la-bored on the park's ranches and farms. Jarvie was murdered and robbed in 1909 by drifters whom he had befriended. His body was set adrift in the Green River, and was not found for several days.
