RAIL TRAIL CLOSURE The Rail Trail is now closed under the bridge around mile post 153 between Promontory and Wanship. Due to construction in the Silver Creek area, it will remain closed throughout the summer and into the fall. Recreational users can still use most of the trail from Promontory or Wanship toward the bridge, but won't be able to cross all the way through. The Utah Department of Transportation anticipates completing construction by mid-October, but that depends on weather conditions. PCHS lacks energy in pre-playoff tune-up vs. former region foe ADAM SPENCER The Park Record With a 3A playoff game looming on Thursday afternoon, the Park City High School boys' soccer team went to Heber on Monday afternoon for a game against non-region rival Wasatch. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Miners couldn't get anything going after the break, allowing another Wasatch goal and missing out on a few scoring chances en route to a 2-0 loss. Though it was a non-region game and it was important to keep key players from getting injured, Park City Coach Jake Jobe would have liked to have seen more effort from the Miners on Monday. "I was disappointed in the effort," he said. "If you don't come out with intensity, you're not going to win many games. We have a playoff game on Thursday and we didn't look like we were ready today." A few key players - seniors Giacomo Castellano and Alex Jackson among them - were held out against Wasatch to let them continue to rehab lingering injuries. Despite missing those important pieces, Jobe said the players who did play still lacked energy. "We were missing a lot of guys, about five seniors, due to injury," he said. "Some of them probably could have played today, but we kept them out just to be safe. We still had no intensity, though, and that was frustrating." It was a tough game for Park City, but Jobe still saw a couple of positives to take away from the loss. "We've played a different back four every game for the past five or six games and they've been really solid," he said. "We've given up very few goals. It's frustrating when we give up some really easy ones after the back four has played so well, but they've been the one consistent performing group this whole season. We've had guys who haven't played together at all this season back there and they've been solid." Cole Stanton, a center back who was converted to a forward for much of the season, moved back to center back recently and has excelled in that role, Jobe added. "Cole, who has been playing forward all year, has now gone back to playing center back and he was solid Friday and today," he said. "That's been the most impressive thing - he switched positions at midseason and did so effortlessly. He's one of the few I thought played well today." Though Park City and Wasatch are no longer region rivals, there is still a rivalry that exists between the two programs. The soccer teams have played each of the two seasons since the Wasps moved up to 4A. Jobe said it's nice to have a game like this after the region schedule is complete to prepare for the playoffs. "It's not a region game late in the season, which is kind of odd, but we purposely scheduled that because we wanted to make sure we had a good opponent before we went and played a challenging opponent down in St. George." The Miners travel to St. George on Thursday to face Pine View in the first round of the 3A playoffs. Pine View is the No. 2 seed in Region 9. Park City enters as the No. 3 seed from Region 10. Jobe is expecting a tough battle in southern Utah. "We got to watch them a little bit 0 Park City defender Cole Stanton battles for possession with a Wasatch player on Monday afternoon in Heber. when we were down there in the preseason, so we've seen some of their better players," he said. "They're a really offensive team, but they've also given up a lot of goals." Coming out of the difficult southern region, Jobe said the Miners can't take Pine View lightly. "I'm expecting a team that's very athletic and talented," he said. "If you're second in the region in the south, that's not an accident. They're a really good team." The Miners will need to come out defensive-minded and with much more intensity than they displayed on Monday, Jobe said. "I think team defense is the thing that's most linked with our intensity and our success," he said. "If you look at every game we've been good this year, it's because we played good team defense. If we do that Thursday, we'll have a chance to win." Park City finished the regular season with a record of 5-8-1 (5-3 in Region 10). Thursday's first-round playoff game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Pine View. 6 Bedrooms / 7 Bathrooms / 7,539 Square Feet Chris Maddox (435) 657-4063 www.RedLedges.com CHRISTOPHER REEVES/PARK RECORD 2286 N.
