Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, April 11-13, 2007 *The Park Record C-2 'Hospice Care is about quality of life' 'Art and Soup' to benefit Community Nursing Services $20.00 By ANNA BLOOM Of the Record staff Community Nursing Services (CNS) hospice case manager for Park City, Dana Travis says that there's still a lot of education that needs to be done in the community about hospice care. "I think physicians, doctors and a lot of healthcare people hold onto patients sometimes a little too long, kind of afraid to approach the hospice arena with patients because they associate it with death," she says. But hospice care is not about death, Travis says, rather, it's about focusing on the quality-of-life issues and quality-of-carc issues on a daily basis. l it's so nice to bring all the needs to people and families right where they are," she says. "It's just so peaceful to have family members be able to visit and to have patients to be able to look at their own pictures on their walls." CNS reports it welcomed approximately 4,000 guests and raised $100,000 at last year's "Art and Soup Celebration" in support of its Home Health and Hospice Care program. The organization hopes to beat that figure this year. "The amount of care we need to assist is growing every year - businesses are growing, populations are growing, people are aging," explains CNS Director of Fund Development Mike Macfarlane. CNS volunteers, CNS employees and other invited guests. This year, CNS says 80 artists submitted work. "Quick Draw" adds an extra dimension to the event, inviting selected artists to create pieces of original work on the spot, allowing event-goers the opportunity to have a peek at their process. "'CNS is a nonprofit so we depend on the community to help with their donations," Travis said, sharing that when she moved to Utah in 2000, she chose the organization for its 501 (c) (3) status, because it "serves the community in a bigger way, rather than becoming a company and holding onto assets...it serves people who don't have healthcare insurance and people in need - it's a great thing to be a part of." The organization has relationships with pharmacies, and has contracts with medical equipment companies to provide the technologies necessary for patients, she adds. The nonprofit has seven offices spread across the state from Moab to Logan. "Art and Soup," is CNS's biggest annual fundraiser, he says. For a second year, the two-day event will take place on the 23rd floor of the Wells Fargo Building in Salt Lake, with 18 area restaurants providing a $15 lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pastries and beverages are included in the price, but it's primarily about the soup, with 18 stations for participating restaurants offering moderately-sized cups of their original soups. Attendees as well as judges vote on their favorite. Kimball Junction's Red Rock Brewing Company, which earned two 2006 awards - including the coveted judge's award - will be returning this week. Midway's Blue Boar Inn will also have a station, as will Salt Lake's Cafe Trio, Panache, and Caffe Molise. The art portion of "Art and Soup" will be provided by 30 local artists who will display and sell their artwork for the benefit of CNS as attendees sip their soup.
