If people are trying to beat the tax deadline, there are several options for last-minute help. Receive a six-month extension of time to file using form 4868, application for automatic extension of time to file U.S. individual income tax return. Payment options are available to taxpayers having trouble paying their tax bill. To do so, download forms and publications at IRS.gov. The filing extension will give extra time to get the paperwork to the IRS, but it does not extend the time to pay any tax due. People have to make an accurate estimate of any tax due and pay at least 90 percent when they request an extension. Interest will be added to any amount not paid by the April 17 deadline. People can also e-file an extension request using tax preparation software or by going to a tax preparer. If a return is completed but you are unable to pay the tax due, do not request an extension. File the return on time and pay as much as possible. The IRS will send a bill or notice for the balance due and will charge interest and penalties only on the unpaid balance. By DAN BI8CHOFF Of the Record staff Bluebird days filled with long, deep, powder slopes with awe-inspiring scenery paint the picture of what skiing in Utah is all about. At least that's-what Ski Utah wants to portray in its newest logo, which was unveiled at a press conference at Park City Mountain Resort on Saturday. The old logo, a simple outline of a mountain ridge, didn't do it justice, according to Nathan Rafferty, president of Ski Utah. "We really didn't feel like that old logo represented us as well as it could have," Rafferty said. "It didn't appeal to Utah's unique aspect. It's got to be about the snow. Not everybody has the 'Greatest Snow on Earth.'" But that wasn't the only reason the eight-year-old logo got the boot. Rafferty said technical reasons were also part of its demise, as designers couldn't utilize it easily. "It was delicate and tougher to work with graphically, but mostly we wanted a new logo, we were ready for an update," Rafferty said. A lot is riding on the success of the logo. "It's a base of your brand identity," Rafferty said. "People look at it and it's got to be about who you are, it all starts there. Our industry won't be made or broken by our logo, but it's often the first impression. It's who we are." An easy-to-work-with image that symbolizes snow and mountains in one design isn't easy to create, however. "It took a year-and-a-half to come up with it," f f SKI UTAH II If: GRLATLSf SNOW ON bARiH SKI Tl IC GnCATCfiT HNOW HN CARTl I UTAH riHi-Ad-ST SNOW ON (7411M IJMOW DM CAnn i SKI UTAH SKI UT SKI UTAH COURTESY OF SKI UTAH The above Image shows the various ways the new Ski Utah logo will be used with light and dark backgrounds. It's the first logo change In 8 years. Galen Leith, a lead designer from Infinite Scale Design Group, counted more than 30 logos Rafferty said. Those who were part of the decision process had a tough time agreeing on an original symbol that spoke to Utah skiing. "The challenge was to be in agreement between all the stakeholders, the Salt Lake Chamber/Bureau and the Park City Chamber/Bureau, and so on," said Cameron Smith, another designer from Infinite Scale. "We had no idea how difficult it would be to get everyone to say, 'That's Utah.1 The guys were banging their heads." Finally, the group came to a consensus. "We narrowed it down to infuse snow and the mountains without a blizzard," Smith said. The logo has a simple, clean look in the shape of a snowflake. Inside the snowflake is a mountain, blue sky and what appears to be one giant snowflake hovering above the peak. "It's the idea of the mountain and the contrast of the bluebird scale with a large snowflake over top of it," Leith said. "It's not as great without a snowy sky, big fat and fluffy." The images inside the logo don't appear to the viewer until further study. It's the clean uncomplicated look that Rafferty wanted. "When people first see it, everybody wants to break it apart. It's cool, it's sim-. pie."
