Show B-3 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, April 11-13, 2007 Schmidt win Mens 40s The Park City Racquet Club hosted the Men's 40s National Tournament this past week.-The top seed for singles. Rich Schmidt, from Orlando, Fla., beat out Hunter Gallaway from Lafayette, Calif, for the coveted championship "gold ball." Schmidt won by a score of 7-5, 62. Third place was taken by Doug Elly of Springfield, Mo. He beat Rick Kepler from Aptos, Calif, by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. In doubles action, Park City player Skosh Berwald with partner Bogdan Badiu beat Len Bowes and George Lukes both of Salt Lake 6-0, 6-2 for third place Bronze ball. Berwald and badiu lost a three-hour semifinal match Thursday evening to players Rich Schmidt and Bill Donadio. The scores was 7-6, 5-7,6-7. The first tie break went to 16-14. The eventual winners of doubles were, Brian Cory and Rick Kepler from California. They beat Rich Schmidt and Bill Donadio 7-6. 6-7, 6-3. On Monday afternoon, a "combined" team comprised of the girls' varsity and boys1 JV squad defeated a similar co-ed squad from Salt Lake's (4A) East High School, 15 - 12. Sophomore Jackie Sitko led all scorers with seven points. Laura Steckbauer added four, Ashley Loyens three, and Brittany Bird had one point. Briggs Lyman led the boys' team to a 15 - 11 win, going off on the Hornets for six goals. Team captain Tyler Pool added four. Matt Leggett added two more, while freshmen starters Griffin Pool and Matt Jones combined for three. On Wednesday evening, the Miners hosted visiting 3A rival Bear River. Still playing without several regular starters, the girls team struggled. Hannah Skarstens played well, and Laura Steckbauer scored five goals, while Jackie Sitko added two more. Even with two regular varsity players absent, the boys team was able to upset the visiting Bears 10-8. Bear River, Tooele and Park City are regarded as the top three boys' teams in 3A. The Miners were scheduled to return to action Tuesday evening. April 10, playing at Cyprus in the Salt Lake Valley- The perennial Utah 5 A champion Kearns Cougars will come to Park City on Wednesday afternoon. The teams then have five days to prepare for a visit by the defending 3A champion Tooele Buffaloes on Monday, April 16. Youth softball clinic The Park City High School girls softball team will hold a Junior Lady Miners Softball Clinic for girls in grades 1-9 on Saturday, April 14. Participants will be instructed on the fundamental skills, rules and fun of softball in a clinic format. Instruction will be provided by the new Park City High head coach Scott Chester, his staff and select varsity players. Grades 1-2 will meet from 1-3'p.m.. grades 3-6 will meet from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and grades 7-9 will meet from 7-9 p.m. A pitching session will be held from 6-7 p.m. All sessions will be held at the Basin Recreation Field House.
