Spring Soccer League locker, but I never used il because it was so out of the way. About one-third of the students have lockers according to Cheryl Chamberlain, the attendance secretary ui Ihe high school. While one-third of students may have lockers officially, that docs not always mean they use them. If it's not convenient, a student may have a locker, but never use it. Some upper classmen use their cars as lockers, but if you do not have an assigned parking place near the front, like myself, that can be quite a walk. There is lillle we can do the stop this besides silting up straight and wearing a proper backpack. Students can confirm with their teacher whether or not they need to bring a textbook every day and if not. leave the book at home. A few stretches and the kink is gone and you move on with your morning. This is completely normal, it happens to everyone, but these days students are becoming more and likely to develop back and neck problems due to extremely heavy backpacks and loo much lime on the computer. I admit, I spend a belter part of my day on the computer and I know this. I also know that il is the reason that my neck is constantly stiff and popping in a very unnatural way. This comes from my lack of decent posture. I try to sit up straight, but I often find myself slouching. Most teenagers don't sit with the best posture and the muscles in the neck and back suffer from it. Parents and other adults who visit Park City High School say thai they see something very common through the entire student body: Students walking hunched over because of very heavy backpacks. This is extremely unhealthy and it has been proven that it can cause long-term damage. These heavy bags come from the immense workload that many students lake on. The main culprit is Advanced Placements classes. Park City High School has one of Ihe highest ratings in the state for students who take AP classes. These classes require a lot of hard work and usually a large textbook. These textbooks plus a book from math or English can make for a very heavy bag. The bags students wear don't help either. A large majority of students carry their school materials in something known as a "mail bag." While they have dwindled in popularity since 1 w*as a freshman, a lot of students still carry their things' in this type of bag. If worn correctly, a mail bag can be quite safe for the body. However, il takes time and energy to lift the bag over your head to put il on correctly and most students don't do that. What about lockers? That would take all of thai weight off of the students and decrease the amount of back problems. Seems like such an easy solution, right? Unfortunately, wrong. Park City High School is a large and fairly complex building and lockers arc handed out at random. I'm in Ihe eighth grade at Ecker Hill Middle School, so I am still a "PCAT." Until recently, I hadn't really been a very motivated swimmer, and only swam once or twice a week Last week, however. Coach Matt gave my team and me a "pep talk." His example and motivation, as well as his great pep talk, have really motivated me to be more enthusiastic about swimming and to give it my all. Because of Coach Malt's great coaching and his belief in me, I am now coming to both early morning swimming and after school swim team practice. Sometimes teachers and coaches don't get enough attention for the good things they do. I just wanted people to know thai we are fortunate to have a swim coach who really cares about kids. Sincerely, Haleigh Flake and hang out wilh our peers. So. when the city starts planning for more development, our voiceshould be heard. Sincerely. Jackie Sitko A placetolumg out Child abiuc Editor: I am a studenl at Ecker-Hill Middle School. As a part of the younger generation. I think that we deserve a place where we can just spend time with friends. Currently there is no place for people under 21 to meet and socialize. We need a place where we can go to have fun. Now, some people would argue, what about New Park? That place is fine for Ihe sports crowd. However, I think we should have something like a pool hail wilh an arcade or maybe a place with small tables to hang out at and a dancing area with a deejay. We don't need another bowling alley, so none of that. We, just need a place to go \*r ^ Editor. Recently in the news. I heard about the Dollars who are accused of abusing their children. This story sickened me. I don't knowhow parents could do that to their loved ones. I also don't know how no one knew that they were being abused. Something must be wrong if people can get away with a crime like this! I hope the children live happy lives and leave the abuse behind. I also hope that laws against abuse become stricter-, so something like this can't happen again. Sincerely.
