Show Park RecorcL PARK CITY, UTAH Saturday, September 18,2001, Events Calendar: C2, Crossword: C4, Scene & Heard; C7, TV Listings: C8, Classifieds: CIO Let the Times at the Eccles By CASEY R. BASPEN Of the Record staff The Park City Performing Arts Foundation recently unveiled plans for an exciting season. The line up has been finalized and a record number of performances have been scheduled - 14 to be exact. Not only that, more multiple performances have been a d d e d which m e a n s audiences have more opportunities to see great artistry in action. Playwright a n d comedian E v e Ensler, known for the popular " T h e Vagina Monologues," a brassy performance by " T h e President's O w n " United States Marine Band, Forbidden Hollywood's spoof o f the rich a n d famous a n d actress turned songstress Minnie Driver are a m o n g the acts that will take center stage at the Eccles during the 2004-2005 season. According to Teri Orr, director of the Park City Performing Arts Foundation, "I think this is the most variety we've had since we opened. There are probably more recognized acts for audiences and we really d o r u n the gamut from family-friendly to adult fare." One group in particular has already received a lot of buzz - ' T h e President's O w n " United States Marine Band. T h e free performance features musicians, many of which Orr says are Julliard-trained, playing for every president since 1798. Jim Santy, a m e m b e r of the Park City School Board and former Marine was able get the band to stop in Park City as part of their western tour to conduct student outreach and perform. If Summit County residents did not notice, the Performing Arts Foundation is late releasing its season schedule. There is a reason. T h e nonprofit was holding out for L o s Lobos, famous for their rendition of Ritchie Valens' hit " B a m b a . " The other, author Sue M o n k JCidd, is another O r r wanted for the season. Kidd's newest novel, " T h e M e r m a i d Chair," reflects Kjdd's strong Southern voice. C o m e December, Leahy, composed o f five sisters and four brothers, will sing, dance and bring a variety of instruments to the stage in what is said to be an energetic performance.. •••+. According to Orr, "Leahy - an Irish group out of Canada - they are all brothers and sisters. They are j u s t s o high-energy. We wanted to have them a s kind o f a Celtic Christmas treat." Not losing faith, O r r has tried for the past four years to get Sweet Honey in the Rock on stage in Park City. Finally, the all-women a cappella group has been signed. T h e G r a m m y award-winning group will close the season in M a y with a performance and screening of a film about the talented musicians. Today, supporters of the Park City Performing Arts Foundation will be able to watch 2-3 minute snippets of the artists as part of the Eccles Center O p e n House, an event that allows guests to tour the theatre, purchase "Early Bird P u n c h C a r d s " and watch their choice of three world cinema films. Held in conjunction with the Salt Lake Film Center, the Global Film Initiative was created to introduce A m e r i c a n audiences to the best o f storytelling from the developing world and to build n e w audiences for world cinema. The first screening, at 3 p.m., is "Angel on the Right," a film by Djamshed Usmonov. The story tells of H a m r o w h o returns to his native Tajikistan in an effort to care for his dying mother, find a way out of debt and face a tough community. ' T i c k e t to J e r u s a l e m " by Rashid Masharawi will screen at 5 p.m. T h e film follows Jaber w h o is trying to build a good life with his wife in a Palestinian refugee c a m p . At the urging of a school teacher, Jaber takes continual risks trying to stage a mobile cine m a screening in Jerusalem's old city, which causes tension with his wife. The final screening will take place at 7 p.m. " M a n g o Yellow," a film by Claudio Assis, focuses on working-class people living difficult lives in the favclas of Recife in Brazil, and the characters intertwined destinies. In addition, guests can purchase their "Early Bird Punch Cards," a 10-punch pass available at a $ 5 0 discount. If the discount is not motivation enough, perhaps the season line up is. With a diverse schedule that has grown this year, ticket prices will remain the same, something that pleases Orr. Orr says, "We have kept the ticket prices exactly the same and we're only able to do that because of our great sponsors and they really help to subsidize the ticket prices."
