And, sure enough, as expected, there were signs of rising fish ... circular ripples popping out over a perfectly calm surface. A few short casts later proved it. And as expected, there was not a single person standing around the shores of Washington Lake in the Uintas to share it with. A month earlier that wouldn't have been the case. The Uintas are popular with anglers in the summer, but, for some reason, not so much in the fall. Yet there are definite advantages to fall fishing, among them being lots of elbow room, goodfishingand the outbreak of fall colors. 'Hie surrounding mountains are wearing their best attire in the fall. The trees become an artist's palette of color ... leaves of reds, oranges, browns and yellows, accented by the deep green of patches of pine. As rhentioned, crowding is not a problem in the fall. There are times when a single fisherman can have a whole lake to himself or herself. The only competition seems to come from a tree limb or patch of brush eager to grab fishing line. It's also a fact that at this lime of the year, the fish seem to be hungrier. 'Hie suggestion is the fish are anxious to put on weight before the big freeze and are therefore eager to taste almost anything that looks like a good meal. In this case, a black Woolly Bugger did its job, and it didn't take long. It hardly dropped below the surface before it caught the attention of a fish. It didn't happen that way on every cast - but often enough to hold interest. Fall is a good lime to fish the Uintas, confirms Gordon Edwards Jr., aquatic fish biologist in the Northern Region. "The water levels are stable, pressure is down and. in the case of brook trout, they're starting to think about spawning and are starting to lake on some very pretty colors," he noted. "It's also a good time to fish streams. The water level is down, so the fish arc concentrated in some of the big pools." This is also a time when fish begin to move closer to shore to look for a meal, so long casts aren't necessary and in some cases less productive. For the fish, their biological clocks are striking dinnertime. Their need to cat while food is available has been triggered, so they prefer to cruise the shallows looking for bugs and worms that have fallen into the water. So the question then becomes: What to use? Byron Gundcrson of Fish Tech Outfitters suggested fly fishermen try patterns the fish are looking for, like ant and beetle patterns in black, brown and rust colors. Also larger flics, such as Woolly Buggers in blacky brown and dark olive. "Hies like Woolly Buggers are a little larger so fish see this as a real nice meal," he noted. One of the more popular lures for the Uinta lakes is a Jake's SpinA-Lure. And, as always, he said worms are a good choice for bait anglers. Edwards suggested using nymphs and small streamers. "And they seem to like something that looks tempting like a spinner or an aggressive pattern like a grasshopper, something that looks worthwhile for the fish to catch," he noted. Some of the lakes along the Mirror Lake Highway were planted for the Labor Day weekend and still hold some of the plants or fish in the 9- to 10-inch range. These would include Mirror, Lost, Teapot, Mooschorn and Pass takes. Edwards explained that some of the best fishing is still early and late in the day, which may require overnight camping. Another advantage to fall fishing is that with the cooler temperatures mid-day fishing can also be very good. RyanBrough, reported fishing Five Point, Doll, Superior and Little Superior in the Uintas recently. He said the long hike from Central Park to Five Point, about 10.6 miles, was worth the effort. "Fishing was best at Superior. We caught a fish every other cast with our spinners - yellow or rose-gold Tee-Spoons and gold Jake's Spin-ALure. These fish had a lot offightin them. There were lots of fish at Doll, but they didn't fight as much," he reported. "We caught brook and cutthroat trout anywhere from 5 inches to as much as 14 inches, but most were around 11 inches." Edwards suggested that anyone heading into the Uintas. especially those unfamiliar with the area, do a little advanced planning. One thing that will help is to become familiar with the area they're planning to fish. There are maps and guide books that arc available showing camping and lake locations. One thing anglers need to be aware of is that the weather in the high country can change quickly, explained Edwards. A rain jacket should be as much a part of a fishing trip as the rod, reel and favorite bait, flyor lure. It's also a good idea to take along extra clothing, warm clothing, waterproof matches, extra food, a compass and a fishing companion. Fall is, indeed, a good time to fish, whether it be in the high country or at some of the more popular lower lakes and streams. The change of the leaves combined with the good fishing, makes the Uintas especially appealing. PRIVATE SCHOOL community service For information call 435-649-2791 3120W.
